Looking for an alternative to the (now dead) ZXing Barcode Scanner – Apps on Google Play

@wiert yeah, I found out about this a few weeks ago, when I wanted to install it on my new phone.
I switched to this one:

gitlab.com/Atharok/BarcodeScan

But I haven’t used it enough to be able to make a final evaluation.

So I will try [Wayback/Archive] Atharok / Barcode Scanner · GitLab with the install from the Android App-store [Wayback/Archive] Scanner: QR Code and Products – Apps on Google Play.

This ZXing [Wayback/Archive] Barcode Scanner – Apps on Google Play used to be the reference implementation of a barcode scanner.

Scan barcodes on products, or Data Matrix and QR Codes containing URLs, contact info, etc.

Note that this app can no longer be updated on Google Play, and there will be no further releases.

Android, starting with Android 14,

blocks the installation of apps that target versions of Android below Marshmallow (6.0).

Too bad, as I liked Barcode Scanner a lot. That’s why I look for a similar alternative as I would rather not downgrade my OnePlus 9 Pro to Android 13 or lower version.

It still is open source, but since I didn’t read the readme (my fault entirely), I filed (and shortly after closed) an issue asking if there were any plans for a new version.

I still wonder why it cannot be updated on Google Play any more and why that problem cannot be resolved.

Anyway: having the source, I might be able to change the manifest, then recompile into a locally-installable Android application.
