Moar FidoNet memories
Posted by jpluimers on 2026/03/27
| Below is a dump of links about FidoNet links with a few remarks so I won’t forget as it was 25+ years ago that I stopped hosting the FidoNet node that had been on-line for almost 10 years (I was a FidoNet point for a few years before that).

Inspiration
Jilles inspired me jotting this down with these tweets:
- [Wayback/Archive] Jilles Groenendijk on Twitter: “Remember Fossil drivers?”
[Wayback/Archive] BBSing.com, BBS Fossil Driver
NetFoss allows DOS based BBS programs to be used
over a Telnet connection or a COM port under Windows.NetFoss will work with any DOS based software that is
`FOSSIL aware’, such as BBS programs, BBS doors,
and terminals). It can also be used with native Win32 BBS programs, to allow DOS based doors to be run via Telnet.Designed for Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT4 workstations
and servers. Supports up to 65000 nodes. Written entirly
in Assembly language for maximum speed, using MASM32.Very small in size.. under 12k per node! Allows DOS
applications designed only for COM1-COM4 to run on
any node.- [Wayback/Archive] Rob Verseijden on Twitter: “@jilles_com Oh yes! And software like Frodo (Frontdoor), tossers, and stacker! :) I used MBM to read Fido (style) messages, some friends used GoldED for that same purpose. I made a little signature&tagline generator that could be used with both. :) :)”
- [Wayback/Archive] Joaquim Homrighausen on Twitter: “@jilles_com Of course we do 😁”
- [Wayback/Archive] Jilles Groenendijk on Twitter: “@joho68 LOL – I personally started dialing in with a 300 baud OptoCoupler. And started my own BBS with a 2400baud Tornado modem. Software used on my 80286 with 223MB ESDI harddisk; QEMM, DESQVIEW, QuickBBS, RemoteAccess, D’Bridge, FastEcho and even FrontDoor ;-) #memorylane”
- [Wayback/Archive] Jan Terpstra (Blue Cipher) on Twitter: “@jilles_com Sure. I wrote ZSX, a file xfer module that used x00 for async comms.”
- [Wayback/Archive] Jilles Groenendijk on Twitter: “Beginning of the ’90 I was recruited to host my own BBS in PCC-NET For region South Holland 2:512/9 I used D’Bridge & QuickBBS / RemoteAccess on a 80286 with QEMM and used US Robotics modems.”
Memorable people that have passed away
- Max Keizer (sysop of NEABBS the very first Dutch BBS even before FidoNet) passed away somewhere between 1999 and 2010 according to various sources:

Nee, die is dood. Al ‘n hele tijd trouwens, helaas.

Girotel was een kwestie van inbellen met het modem en datzelfde modem werd gebruikt om met NEABBS te communiceren, een acroniem dat stond voor Nederlands Eerste Algemene Bulletin Board System. Jawel, vanaf huis gerund door Max Keizer, ook alweer bijna tien jaar dood.
- Jan Vermeulen (sysop of The Poor Man’s Workstation and long time Treasurer DFF) passed away in 2022:

- Rene Vreeman and Rinus Dekker passed away as per [Wayback/Archive] Jilles Groenendijk on Twitter: “@59B @syljil Aantal mensen uit deze lijst zijn veel te vroeg gestorven”
Jan Terpstra and Jilles were still alive and kicking when writing this in 2023, though Space Karen has limited Jilles’ (then payed) Twitter account. Some of his (now deleted) Tweets on Fidonet (from what the above is a quote) and related Tweets from Jan and me:

A Freeware Telnet FOSSIL driver for Windows
NetFoss allows DOS based BBS software to work over a Telnet or Serial port connection under 32-bit editions of Windows (including Windows 10), as well 64-bit editions augmented with NTVDMx64 (using NF64).
NetFoss will work with any DOS BBS software that is FOSSIL aware, such as BBS software, BBS doors, Doorway and DOS BBS serial/modem communication terminals. NetFoss can also be used with native Windows BBS programs (32-bit and 64-bit) , to allow DOS based doors to work over Telnet.

My own FidoNet presence (almost 10 years)
I stopped after almost 10 years as Novell NetWare 3.11 was not Y2K proof and I did not have time and energy to upgrade everything as during that era my better half moved in, her mom had cancer and then my better half got cancer too.

Some of my tweets about FidoNet
- [Wayback/Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers @wiert@mastodon.social on Twitter: “@jessica_schalz I miss Fidonet, BITNET Relay, GMail on VAX/VMS, UUCP and Gopher. CC @bagder”
- [Wayback/Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers @wiert@mastodon.social on Twitter: “@danny_thorpe Poor guy (; (Back then, I had a pair of US Robotics HST Dual Standard modems upgraded to V.90, a Zyxel ISDN/analog capable modem, all to easier dial in to get messages from the USA – Fidonet, CompuServe). Nostalgia:”
- [Wayback/Archive] Jeroen Pluimers on Twitter: “I used to be 2:281/256 But it began with just a BBS and online chat. From there: … Fidonet related blog posts:
wiert.me/category/history/bbs/fidonetThe interop between social networks back then was pure gold. Today’s lack of interop is horrible.…” - [Wayback/Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers @wiert@mastodon.social on Twitter: “@Carnage4Life BBS -> Fidonet + email -> LISTSERV + BITNET chat + UUCP/Bang-path email (via VAX/VMS gMail) + CompuServe groups -> Usenet + SMTP email -> ICQ + MSN + Skype -> twitter + Google Gmail + XMPP -> unbearable social network explosion”
