Interesting: this USD 300 device might be a lot cheaper and versatile for my Nikon D700 and D300 than the USD 700 Nikon WT-4/4A transmitter.

I especially love “works great to set a custom white balance: just leave the cap on, set the white balance, remove the cap, and all done” portion of the 18-200 mm Nikon VR lens cap replacement article.
The lid of a Nutella 220 gram jar will do the job perfectly well (and serve as a 72mm lens cap replacement)

The Camera Shutter Life Database can give you some indication how long the shutter of your DSLR can last.
Both my Nikon body types are listed: The site has an entry for the Nikon D300, and the D700.
At the end of each page, you can upload your own shutter counts.
