The title of the linked article is misleading. Blu-ray content encoding was already cracked. This master key is for the HDCP encoding used in HDMI interfaces. It allows for the removal of rights management from non-Blu-ray sources, such as live streams. Interestingly, an Intel spokesperson asserted that HDCP doesn’t need to be cryptographically secure; it is enough, he said, that some attempt at encryption is made in order to allow the use of DMCA takedowns.
