Undoing TinyUrl, Goo.gl, Bitly and other URL shorteners: http://expandurl.appspot.com/

Great stuff: http://expandurl.appspot.com/
Especially when a shortened URL breaks, and you want to find out if the underlying URL got moved to a different place.

The above URL stopped working after a few years, so I dug up the history of it:
- Start in 2010: [Wayback/Archive] ExpandURL – Expand shortened URL’s!
- Redirect march 2016: [Waybac] to a new site: [Wayback/Archive] Link Expander & Decrypter – Unshorten url in one click!
- Error in 2024: [Wayback/Archive] 503 Server Error
In turn, Link Expander, after starting:
- Turned off heir API inmay 2016: [Wayback/Archive] Link Expander & Decrypter – Unshorten url in one click!
Note: We have stopped the API services due to high server load & repeated use
- 2024: still alive as site at [Wayback/Archive] Link Expander & Decrypter – Unshorten url in one click!
The expandurl answer was listed until the end of 2016 at [Wayback/Archive] twitter – Find where a t.co link goes to – Stack Overflow
I’ll use this to promote my own AppEngine-powered service, ExpandURL. It has a nice API that will expand among others t.co URLs. :)For example, given an example URLhttp://t.co/gLP0Ucg, the relevant API call would behttp://expandurl.appspot.com/expand?url=http%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2FgLP0Ucg. Result:{ "status": "OK", "end_url": "http:\/\/www.notquitewrong.com\/rosscottinc\/2011\/06\/27\/the-system-506-office-forecast\/", "redirects": 1, "urls": ["http:\/\/t.co\/gLP0Ucg", "http:\/\/www.notquitewrong.com\/rosscottinc\/2011\/06\/27\/the-system-506-office-forecast\/"], "start_url": "http:\/\/t.co\/gLP0Ucg" }
After that, the answer was removed. Still cool though for [Wayback/Archive] Håvard to have created and maintain that service for quite a while.
The Stack Overflow answer got a nice cURL solution which I will blog about in Fixing the goo-gl URL shortener debacle: 36 affected posts.
