Trigger warning: recovering data of someone close to you which suddenly died
Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/28
Sudden death sometimes is chosen, which makes it even for the ones close that are involved.
That’s why the below MCH2022 lecture by father and son Jilles and Jurre Groenendijk two years ago is really important.
I was reminded about it by a [Wayback/Archive] Thread by @jilles_com on Thread Reader App last week, but before that a big TRIGGER WARNING from the lecture:

Links (I added the WhatsApp one as they maintain localised lists):
- [Wayback/Archive] Global Suicide Hotline Resources | WhatsApp Help Center (translated to your locale, or a locale you can choose)
- [Wayback/Archive] Homepage | 113 Zelfmoordpreventie
- [Wayback/Archive] Call A Hotline – List of Worldwide Suicide Hotlines | Suicide Stop
Neither Jilles, nor Jelle would have done the lecture alone for many reasons, like the material being so close to them and triggering them during the lecture. So please be warned before watching. It is mentally heavy stuff, but also important.
The thread:
[Trigger warning]
A couple of years ago, @Jurrejelle and I were asked to host a lecture about the work that we did to help out next of kin when people take their life. It turned out that quite a lot of people in the industry who help out but are silent about it, just as we were.
You never advertise and you rather not do it, but somehow that kind of work seems to find you. You need to do it with multiple people and are required to be emotionally stable. I consider is similar with forensic work or performing key ceremonies.
This is the link to our lecture. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ8fpfkYOGg
It contains QR codes that will help you or help you help others with suicidal thoughts.
Phone numbers / Training.
And as much as you want to help sometimes you won’t succeed. I have lost a few good friends/mentors.
The recorded session is available in at least two places:
- [Wayback/Archive] 2022 – What to do when someone close to you takes their life and you are not Tech-Savvy – YouTube
- [Wayback/Archive] What to do when someone close to you takes their life and you are not Tech-Savvy – media.ccc.de
The full session abstract is at [Wayback/Archive] What to do when someone close to you takes their life and you are not Tech-Savvy :: MCH2022 :: pretalx.
