note to self: figure out which browser to use for MV2 (Manifest Version 2) plugins and how to (re)install them
Posted by jpluimers on 2025/08/01
Edit 20250802:
Migrating from Chrome to Edge was way easier than anticipated: it imported my account, bookmarks and my extensions automagically. With one exception (uBlock Origin), most of them were enabled too, apart from a few that Edge needed extra permission confirmation for and the ones that Chrome had disabled. All of these could be enabled/installed after installing uBlock Origin manually.
Then I had go to through the tedious process of re-signing in various accounts (like mail, blogging, social media, etc).
These things did not import automatically and needed manual adjustment:
- Default JavaScript settings (I have that disabled by default, and enable this on a site per site base: too many advertisements hog my CPU, and too many information stealing attempts through advertisement networks); in Edge you configure this at
edge://settings/privacy/sitePermissions/allPermissions/javaScript - All open tabs: need to figure out a way to transfer those from Chrome to Edge.
- Search engine settings (including shortcuts): had to manually copy these over from
chrome://settings/searchEngines?search=searchtoedge://settings/privacy/services/search/searchEngines - Enable some extensions/features that got disabled or were not active at first:
- [Wayback/ArchiveBad]
ClearURLs (Microsoft Edge Store)
(essential to strip tracking data from URLs) - [Wayback/Archive]
Pushbullet (Chrome Web Store) for syncing data between smartphone and desktop - Google Lens (will expand on this later)
- [Wayback/Archive]
JSONView – Chrome Web Store
- [Wayback/Archive]
Gmail Show Time – Chrome Web Store (shows time in various Gmail views in addition to date)
- [Wayback/Archive]
Don’t add custom search engines – Chrome Web Store
- [Wayback/Archive]
Eight Dollars – Chrome Web Store

FadBlock Origin: Friendly YouTube™ Adblock – Chrome Web Store

KB SSL Enforcer – Chrome Web Store
- [Wayback/Archive] bluesky-shortcuts – Chrome Web Store
- [Wayback/Archive]
Archive Page (Microsoft Edge Store)
According to
edge://extensions/some of these are from the Chrome Web Store. At a later stage I will try find Microsoft Edge Store replacements. - [Wayback/ArchiveBad]
A positive surprise was that the settings for [Wayback/Archive] Paste It – Text Snippets – Chrome Web Store transferred without problems to [Wayback] Paste It – Text Snippets – Microsoft Edge Addons
Original post:
Chrome just blocked these useful plugins (the live links to the Chrome Web Store likely die later or are already dead; the archived links all work; the Microsoft Edge Store work for now):

Disable HTML5 Autoplay (Chrome Web Store) - [Wayback/Archive]
Google Search “View Image” Button (Chrome Web Store) - [Wayback/Archive]

Pushbullet (Chrome Web Store) - [Wayback/Archive]

Social Fixer for Facebook (Microsoft Edge Store) - [Wayback/Archive]
Tabs Backup & Restore (Chrome Web Store) - [Wayback/Archive]
uBlock Origin (Microsoft Edge Store) - [Wayback/Archive]
Watch Later (Chrome Web Store)
Will add links to them later.
Need to figure out which browser still supports these for a while, and what alternatives there are.
Note that:
- Firefox is not an alternative: it has architectural asynchronous keyboard/mouse input issues on all platforms I tested (MacOS/Windows/Linux) which makes it unworkable for me.
- Safari does not have the plugins I need plus lacks a lot of keyboard support.
Oh, it disabled these extensions as well:

- [Wayback/Archive] Edge on MacOS is actually much better than Chrome! : MicrosoftEdge
It’s quick, snappy, supports all Chrome extensions, it uses less RAM, it’s got Picture-in-Picture. It’s really good!
Plus, for Touch Bar MacBooks, Edge makes MUCH better use of it than Chrome. Chrome only has static buttons that stay there, meanwhile Edge has a tab switcher and video scrubber like Safari.
This is actually really cool. I really like Safari’s usage of the Touch Bar, but it’s buggy over there with stuff getting messed up and out of order. Sometimes the Pause/Play button disappears 🤨.
Overall really satisfied with Microsoft Edge. Great browser!
…
Totally agree. Better than Safari as well (better features and more stable). Happily using Edge as my daily driver on macOS and Windows.

- [Wayback/Archive] 4 browsers that will continue to support uBlock Origin and other ad blockers with Manifest V2 mentioned Firefox (out for me: architectural async input handling issues on all platforms), Vivaldi (too small a team for me), Edge (which I have tried for now), Brave (too small a team for me)
