BMW E46: beeping when driving slowly and the ABS computer being broken
Posted by jpluimers on 2022/01/31
Some time into the waiting for a new ABS/DSC computer to arrive for my E46, I heard beeping while driving slowly (it would start when standing still and disappear when driving around 20 km/h).
This was odd, as I didn’t touch anything besides the steering wheel or the gas and break pedals.
Nothing in the instrument cluster changed either, so that put me in the wrong direction.
When the ABS/DSC computer is broken, the cluster looks like this:
([Wayback] image from [Wayback] How to Change ABS ASC Control Module – Trifecta – #5DF5 Error – E46 | BMW E46 Fanatics Forum)
Instrument cluster with trifecta: ABS, DSC, BRAKE are all on.
- The DSC/ASC light in the center is yellow
- The brake light is read
- The ABS light is yellow
The brake light hid the issue, which was an easy fix, as per [Wayback] Parking brake light shows red + beeping while underway..help please | BimmerFest BMW Forum
Somehow I touched the handbrake (which I normally do not use) so it went up one notch. You hardly see it, but it normally does:
- turn on the brake light red
- beeps about every second at low speed after you come from a standstill
Easy fix though: release the handbrake.
