finding duplicates – voidtools forum

Posted by jpluimers on 2025/10/07

That feeling you have been living under a stone since 2014: [Wayback/Archive] finding duplicates – voidtools forum

1.4 Beta has both dupe: & sizedupe: functions.
(In the Index, you need to index the file size & also enable Fast size sort.)

You can combine them, something like:

> dupe: sizedupe: c: file:

Or even add a size to it:

> dupe: sizedupe: c: file: size:>2MB

Note that that finds file name AND (I believe its an AND) file size duplications – anywhere, not necessarily limited to C:, & also that name AND size are the only qualifications for “duplication”, as in files meeting that criteria may not be (byte-by-byte) “duplicates”.

A partial excuse is that these never made it to the changelog at [Wayback/Archive] www.voidtools.com/Changes.txt or [Wayback/Archive] www.voidtools.com/BetaChanges.txt.

It is in the documentation since May 2017 at [Wayback/Archive] Searching – voidtools though:

dupe:
namepartdupe:
attribdupe:
dadupe:
dcdupe:
dmdupe:
sizedupe:
Search for duplicated files.

Another cool thing where that thread starts with a context menu entry in Explorer that starts Everything:

I created a function for the explorer context menu “finding duplicates”, which shows all duplicates of the appropriate file.

For this I created a batchfile “everything_this.bat” in the installation folder of Everything with the following text:

"%~dp0Everything.exe" -search "%~nx1" -filter "Everything"

… which passes the filename to everything.exe.

For creating the context menu entry (with icon) an entry in the registry is needed. The following reg-file did it for me.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\Shell\find duplicates]
"icon"="C:\\_src\\_utilities\\context_menue\\Everything\\Everything.exe"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\Shell\find duplicates\Command]
@="C:\\_src\\_utilities\\context_menue\\Everything\\everything_this.bat \"%L\""

Only the the paths to “Everything.exe” and to “everything_this.bat” may need to be adapted.

Via [Wayback/Archive] Software-update: Everything 1.4.1.1027 – Computer – Downloads – Tweakers (thanks [Wayback/Archive] Jan VP):

Gisteren gebruikt (met “sizedupe:“) op de netwerkschijf (miljoenen bestanden) om grote dubbels te vinden en aldus schijfruimte te besparen. Drie collega’s aangesproken en 48GB gewonnen.

When you filter using sizedupe: (or dupe:) you are only filtering what is displayed rather then what was found.

sizedupe: says to find all files that are duplicates by file size.

sizedupe: zip: says to find all files that are duplicate by file size, but instead of showing all those files to me, only display those that are “zip” files.

Please keep in mind that sizedupe: will find results from the ENTIRE index, not the current results.

    Searching for:
    c: sizedupe:

Will NOT find files on your C: drive with the same size.
It will instead find files in your ENTIRE index with the same size and limit the results shown to c: only.

A view to show only duplicated sizes for the current results is on my TODO List.

Note: Everything dupe functions should be used as a guide only.
Two files with the same size does not indicate a duplicated file, but it should give you a very quick idea of what may be duplicated. Please try searching for:
sizedupe:and sorting by size descending. This will find files with the same size.-or-Please try searching for:
ext:mp3 dupe:and sorting by name ascending. This will find files with the same filename.

Notes: dupe: and sizedupe: find duplicates in the ENTIRE index, not the current results.

If you wish to apply a filter with dupe: and sizedupe:, please apply the filter first, export results as an EFU file list and perform the dupe: search on the filelist, for example, to search your L: drive, N: drive and O: drive, for mp3 files only, to later perform a sizedupe: search:

    1. In Everything, type in the following search:
      l:|n:|o: ext:mp3
    2. From the File menu, click Export...
    3. Change Save as type to: EFU Everything File List
    4. Choose a file name and click Save.
    5. From the File menu, click Open File List
    6. Select the filelist you saved from earlier and click OK.
    7. Type in the following search:
      sizedupe:
    8. Sort by size descending for the best results.
    9. When you are finished finding duplicates, close the opened file list:
      • From the File menu, click Close File List.
