Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Joint Hypermobility-Related Disorders are blanket terms for two etiologically and clinically heterogeneous groups of pathologies that usually appears in childhood. These conditions are seen by different medical fields, such as psychiatry in the case of ASD, and musculoskeletal disciplines and genetics in the case of hypermobility-related disorders. Thus, a link between them is rarely established in clinical setting, despite a scarce but growing body of research suggesting that both conditions co-occur more often than expected by chance. Hypermobility is a frequent sign of hereditary disorders of connective tissue (e.g. Ehlers-Danlos syndromes, Marfan syndrome), on which the main characteristic is the multisystem fragility that prone to proprioceptive and motor coordination dysfunction hence to trauma and chronic pain. Considering the high probability that pain remains disregarded and untreated in people with ASD due to communication and methodological difficulties, increasing awareness about the interconnection between ASD and hypermobility-related disorders is relevant, since it may contribute to identify those ASD patients vulnerable to suffer from pain.

Abel Wang, a true legend, is gone.

Hopefully my response to his spouse was appropriate enough:
Thanks for this tribute. It’s amazing, lovely, wonderful, all at the same time.
Abel is one of the persons that I would have loved to meet in real life.
I’m forever grateful that Scott Hanselman got me into touch with Abel Wang. Abel informed and motivated me. After that we stayed in touch every now and then about being ill and how to deal with that.
I had to contemplate for a while as this hit me harder than I thought, especially given the “always positive Abel” he is in my – and many others’ – minds.
So to all his close ones: remember the positivity and try to be like that. Abel expects that from us.
Glad I could send him some good thoughts last week, and miss him already.

Een moment van herdenking: 25 jaar na de Herculesramp.

Vandaag 25 jaar geleden alweer was de Herculesramp.
Elk jaar wat tranen voor René Hendriksen, waar ik samen mee gespeeld heb bij het muziekkorps Adest Musica en die na de ramp ineens weg viel bij evenementenorkest De Straatklinkers.
Er zijn natuurlijk nog veel meer slachtoffers te herdenken (een lijst staat op [Archive.is] Defensie maakt namen bekend van slachtoffers vliegramp | Trouw), en natuurlijk gaan ook gedachten uit naar naasten en degenen die het wel overleefd hebben (zoals [Wayback] Nicole Adams – Studio040 interview): zij ondervinden nog steeds een grote invloed op hun leven.
In 2011 werd de 15 jarige herdenking van de Herculesramp omlijst met het nummer Hymn to the Fallen tijdens de Nationale Taptoe 2011 in Ahoy (citaat van deze YouTube opname staat onderaan).
Het nummer komt uit de film Saving Private Ryan, en is geschreven door John Williams als eerbetoon aan alle gevallen militairen.
Sinds het in 2007 in het repertoire van Adest Musica kwam, hebben we het talloze malen gespeeld, uiteraard op 4 mei tijdens de nationale herdenking in Sassenheim, en ook op diverse uitvaarten van leden van Adest Musica.
Zowel het nummer als René hebben voor altijd een speciaal plaatsje in mijn hart.
