Software Downloads: Download UniFi Network Server – Ubiquiti: also known as UniFi Network application and apparently the successor of the UniFi Controller

Posted by jpluimers on 2025/06/02

After moving, I wanted to install new UniFi access points and upgrade the firmware of my existing ones.

The Cloud Key running the UniFi Controller software had long died (bringing that to market was a really bad idea from Ubiquiti in my view), so I started looking for UniFi controller software I could run locally.

From past contacts with other UniFi users, I knew there was some kind of Docker solution, but I hard a hard time finding it.

It looks like UniFi has been busy though and have three download lists coming back with essentially the same software, heck even point to the same release notes ([Wayback/Archive] UniFi Network Application 8.6.9 | Ubiquiti Community)

The actual download of the most recent version is at [Wayback/Archive] Software Downloads: Download UniFi Network Server – Ubiquiti.

If I understand [Wayback/Archive] Self-Hosting a UniFi Network Server – Ubiquiti Help Center correctly, what they mean is that the UniFi Network Application is an implementation of a UniFi Network Software that runs on MacOS/Windows/Linux.

You will likely have to download by hand as – especially on Windows – the package managers are versions behind. At the time of writing the version available above was V8.6.9 released 2024-11-06. This is what was on the package managers:

Reminder to self: mid-term solution for replacing Ubiquiti access points

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/12/11

Last year, after an already long sequence of doing stupid things, Ubiquiti sued Brian Krebs.

For many this was a reason to think about what to replace their Ubiquiti.

My cloud key had already died, I never installed the USG router, so this is the reminder to see if anything has come up to replace the Unifi access points that is easy to manage in a self-hosted way are powered over ethernet, do the same seamless handover and cooperative WiFi antenna management.

Some links from back then:

UniFi – Install a UniFi Cloud Controller on Amazon Web Services – Ubiquiti Networks Support and Help Center

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/03/06

I was not aware you could this: [WayBack] UniFi – Install a UniFi Cloud Controller on Amazon Web Services – Ubiquiti Networks Support and Help Center

Giving it a bit more thought, I’m not sure I would want this, as it would presume you have an internet connection that is up on the WAN side.

You’d need this before installing any of your Unify equiment, even when installing your first Unify router, which would mean a chicken and egg problem.

Also it would mean you can only use the cloud key when the WAN is down, you cannot use the cloud-key, not even locally.

Updating a Unifi Controller (either a Cloud Key, or a local installation like a VM)

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/07/27

Note that by now, Unifi Controller is usually named Unifi Network Management Controller (somewhere in between it was called Unify Network Controller).

You can either run a local installation on a Linux box (usually Ubuntu), for instance the CloudKey ESXi Appliance, or from a Cloud Key (if you do, do not get a version 1 Cloud Key; too much SD card and other hardware trouble)

Steps to update both the Unifi Controller Firmware (Cloud Key only) and the Unifi Controller software (both Cloud Key and local installation) are below.

I am assuming that 192.168.71.50 is the IP address of your Cloud Key, and for brevity, I included few screenshots, but opted for URLs.

Devices steps

  1. Logon to your Cloud Key at https://192.168.71.50:8443/manage
  2. Go to the devices page https://192.168.71.50:8443/manage/site/default/devices/1/50/uap
  3. Ensure the filter is “APs” (either through the dropdown when your tab is narrow, or the button when the tab is wide)
  4. Press the “Start rolling update” button.
  5. Confirm the rolling update
  6. Wait for the rolling update to finish

Screenshots for selecting “APs” with narrow and wide tab widths:

Unifi Cloud Key: “We have detected that your SD card is missing. Please insert it and reboot your Cloud Key or disable automatic backup.”

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/04/23

Got this a while ago with 5.10.17:

“Missing SD card”

“We have detected that your SD card is missing. Please insert it and reboot your Cloud Key or disable automatic backup.”

This might be a hardware issue with [Archive.is] Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Key, UC-CK: AmazonSmile: Computer & Zubehör

Reading the 1-star reviews, SD-card problems seem paramount: [Archive.is] Amazon.de:Kundenrezensionen: Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Key, UC-CK.

For me, most of the times this solved the problem:

  1. Power down the Cloud Key
  2. Remove the SD card
  3. Insert the SD card
  4. Power up the Cloud Key
