SDB:System upgrade – openSUSE

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/05/01

SDB:System upgrade – openSUSE.

Every once in a while, I feel like I have been living under a stupid rock.

This was one of these cases. About 5 years ago, openSUSE added this feature:

openFATE – #305634: Debian-like dist-upgrade live system full version upgrade.

It is awesome, requires a bit of twiddling and afterwards you have a system that:

  • was updated in-place while live
  • is the most current openSUSE version

I don’t know of any drawbacks yet (will soon try it). If I find ones, I will post a new entry here.

The basic steps are like these:

  1. Make sure you can update your system to the youngest state of the installed version number
  2. Fiddler with the zypper config files using a sed script to replace the currently installed version number to the target version you want to upgrade to
  3. Download the updates
  4. Update
  5. Reboot
  6. Test
  7. Done
