Ivan Kuleshov on GitHub – Uptime-Lab/KVM-rack-stand-for-16-Mac-minis

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/04/11

In-rackIf you ever need a large bunch of Mac minis in a data center, then start reading at [Wayback/Archive] GitHub – Uptime-Lab/KVM-rack-stand-for-16-Mac-minis.

The repository by Ivan Kuleshov has all information you need, including scripts for Pi-KVM, and 3D printing STL source files.

It was covered in [Wayback/Archive] The MagPi issue 139 — The MagPi magazine (direct [Wayback/Archive] MagPi139.pdf; it’s too large for [Wayback] Goole Docs on-line viewing).

BTW: If you like the magazine, consider [Wayback/Archive] The MagPi magazine contributions.

Ivan also wrote some articles on his own blog:

  1. [Wayback/Archive] Uptime Lab > KVM rack stand for Mac minis, KVMac16 (the why and the journey through early versions)
  2. [Wayback/Archive] KVM rack stand for Mac minis, KVMac16 (the current version and assembly instructions)

Via the long tweet [Wayback/Archive] Ivan Kuleshov on Twitter: “An article about the KVMac16 in MagPi magazine. Issue 139…”

An article about the KVMac16 in MagPi magazine.
Issue 139
PDF is already available for free download on the official website: magpi.raspberrypi.com/issues/139

The project is about building a stand for 16 Mac mini to be installed in a server room with full remote control. Including the ability to PHYSICALLY press the power button of the Mac mini (using a tricky servo-based kinematics, with eight servos to be exact).

Full assembly instruction is on my blog (uplab.pro/2023/12/kvm-rack-stand-for-mac-minis-kvmac16-part-2/) , all files are on GitHub

Of course you can ask and you probably want to ask “why”? To develop and test software on Apple silicon processors. Unfortunately, there just aren’t any good alternatives for that right now.

and [Wayback/Archive] The MagPi magazine: download of The MagPi issue 139.

Be sure to follow Ivan as he now even developed KVM solutions based on the Mac Mini main boards with some soldering to make power management a lot easier and far less space requirements.
