How do you disable these thumbnails that pop up near the end of videos!? : r/youtube
Posted by jpluimers on 2025/12/09
Since a few years, YouTube puts annoyingly overlays on top of like the last 5 to 10 seconds of videos often covering valuable content.
Lately – while preparing for concerts – I have watched a lot of score music videos where the end really is very important to me (see the example below), for instance when rehearsing [Wayback/Archive] La Alhambra – Llano – YouTube until the final end.
The solution came from [Wayback/Archive] How do you disable these thumbnails that pop up near the end of videos!? : r/youtube
You can block annoying end cards, which is what YT calls the thumbnail previews at the end of a video in various ways.
I don’t like to keep adding browser extensions so a cleaner way would be to add these custom filters to your ad blocker. This recently stopped working in ABP. However these filters still work wonderfully in ublock origin.
Add this filter:
youtube.com##.ytp-ce-elementIf that doesn’t block all of the end cards, then add these as well:
youtube.com##.ytp-ce-covering-overlay
youtube.com##.ytp-ce-element-shadow
youtube.com##.ytp-ce-covering-image
youtube.com##.ytp-ce-expanding-image
youtube.com##.ytp-ce-element.ytp-ce-video.ytp-ce-element-show
youtube.com##.ytp-ce-element.ytp-ce-channel.ytp-ce-channel-this
I’m still one of the lucky people¹ that can use uBlock Origin and just adding this one works well:
youtube.com##.ytp-ce-element
In a similar way, you can block content at the end of a video (which shows after the video has stopped) using this syntax:
youtube.com##.ytp-endscreen-content
This might work in other block filters, though as per above seems to be unsupported by Adblock Plus (ABP).

Of course this all fails on mobile, where especially YouTube Shorts are unusable as YouTube covers about 20% of their pages with useless stuff. See [Wayback/Archive] How do I hide all that stuff, so I can actually see the video. (Remove UI, title and buttons in YouTube Shorts) : youtube.

¹ Early 2025, Google try to ditch uBlock Origin from my browser and ditched it from the play store for new installs; luckily because I already had it installed previously I could restore it.
The uBlock Origin Extension is now marked as “This extension is no longer available because it doesn’t follow best practices for Chrome extensions.” on my machine: [Wayback/Archive] uBlock Origin – Chrome Web Store
There is a uBlock Origin Lite version though lacking custom filters as it has limited filters (because of the Manifest V3 limitations). You can find it at [Wayback/Archive] uBlock Origin Lite – Chrome Web Store
