In memory of Matthias Eißing (Embarcadero, formerly Borland/Inprise/Borland/CodeGear)

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/02/16

Earlier today, I got the sad news that my friend Matthias Eißing suddenly passed away in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.

Valentines day will never be the same.

Rest in Peace dear Matthias Eißing. Hope you will virtually keep drinking beer and keep the great conversations that made you so many friends going.

[Wayback/Archive] Eine sehr traurige Nachricht – Delphi-PRAXiS

Helping others with is technical knowledge was what Matthias loved doing so much: in person (see [Wayback/Archive] Matthias Eißing – Entwickler Konferenz and [Wayback/Archive] Programm | EKON 27 – Die Entwickler Konferenz für Delphi & more), virtual (watch  [Wayback/Archive] Magdeburger Developer Days 2021 03.09.2021 – Matthias Eißing “Delphi Community Edition” – YouTube), individually (uncountable chat messages, phone and video calls, e-mails and in-company meetings), white papers / blog posts (like [Wayback/Archive] HighDPI Entwicklung unter Windows) and forum messages (just see the list at [Wayback/Archive] Delphi-PRAXiS – Ergebnis der Suchanfrage).

I had hoped to meet at EKON28 again, as our story goes back to the very first [Wayback/Archive] EKON – The Conference for Delphi & More in 1997 @ the Raunheim Astron Hotel Rhein-Main organised by Masoud Kamali ([Wayback/Archive] Massi Kamali (@MasoudMassi) / Twitter).

EKON was the first conference by Masoud/S&S. It and later conferences helped the Astron Hotels in the southern Frankfurter area (a few years Raunheim, Rüsselsheim and many years Mörfelden) grow a lot and it was the base were Matthias and a lot of other developers kept meeting up and started to know about each others personal lives as well.

The circle of online interaction life (yes, before social media there was online interaction): Nick Wright on – Mastodon.ART

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/11/29

Low-tech beats hi-tech. It always does.

Oh, and it so much reminds me of BITNET relay, early internet and BBS/Fidonet days.

[Wayback/Archive] Nick Wright: “1993: I use BBSes for online i…” – Mastodon.ART

1993: I use BBSes for online interaction. Each BBS is run by some random person. They connect to a federated worldwide network. I keep my notes in .TXT files.

2008-2022: I use social networks like Facebook and Twitter for online interaction. They’re huge and popular. I use Evernote for my notes, which is full of features.

2023: I use Mastodon for online interaction. Each instance is run by some random person. They connect to a federated worldwide network. I keep my notes in .TXT files.

Chemopomp | Home

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/11/17

Back when I had chemo in 2020 because of recum cancer metastases in the liver, the below Hepatic Arterial Infusion Pump (HAIP) alternative was not available yet. It means that current generations of Dutch patients have an improved method of treatment that hopefully helps increase their chances of survival.

Trying to do my best to be “and” instead if “either, or” (plus some links to convert Instagram media id to/from shortcode)

[Wayback/Archive] Danielle Braun dr. on Twitter: “En en in plaats van of of.”

The image is by @thepresentpsychologist on Instagram (figured that out via Google Lens finding [Wayback/Archive] Psychological Safety Newsletter #39: Diversity and Ethical Behaviour | Psychological Safety), but and it took some effort to find the original post back as Instagram does not allow anonymous browsing.

Bestellen kan, maar leveren duurt nog even: Kiezen & Delen is een spel vol dilemma’s, stellingen en vragen over het leven, ziek zijn en de dood.

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/10/13

https://kiezenendelen.nu/

B0rk on her blog: Celebrate tiny learning milestones

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/10/03

I celebrate my tiny milestones by writing blog posts on the things I learn.

What is your way to celebrate them?

Read [Wayback/Archive] Celebrate tiny learning milestones, especially this bit:

It’s really helpful for me to celebrate tiny milestones like this. I celebrate a lot by writing blog posts – I wrote the above list mostly by looking at my list of old blog posts for things I’d written about related to C.
If you don’t blog (it’s definitely not for everyone!), it can be helpful to write down this kind of thing in your [Wayback/Archive] brag document instead.
But I do think it’s important to celebrate these milestones somewhere. It gives me a real sense that I’m making progress and it helps me stay motivated to keep learning about the thing.

All printers hate us

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/08/11

I’m not alone in feeling hated by printers and multifunctionals.

I had already seen this 2019 comic [Archive.is] System32Comics on Twitter: “Printers nowadays… “ quite a while ago:

  1. User: Hey printer, can you please print this document?
  2. Printer: Low on Cyan
  3. User: Don’t worry, it’s just a black and white text
  4. Printer: No fuck you, low on Cyan

Printers and the drivers shipped by manufacturers hate me so much, that I now have the habit of using older printers which are better supported out-of-the-box by modern operating systems, hence this tweet:

[Archive.is] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers on Twitter: “I try to avoid using the software provided by the printer manufacturer. Usually stock PCL or PostScript drivers work fine.… “

Thanks to [Archive.is] Matt Schultz 😷 on Twitter: “Seems about right… … “, I found out that early 2021 Stevie Martin came along with this hilarious video [Archive.is] “when you’re trying to print something”:

https://twitter.com/5teviem/status/1367868899681832965

And of course the System32Comics version was commented immediately: [Archive.is] Mr. Dubi and Dr. Kan on Twitter: “… “ (:

But also a few other nice comments were made that I had not known of before:

I got at that thread because of [Archive.is] Troy Hunt on Twitter: “No? Yes? The UX in this @Epson printer is undoubtedly one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Just insane. (Near new ET-16600 FWIW.)… :

Need to work on my death cyber plan; will start with what BlackRoomSec wrote on Twitter: “DO NOT SHUT OFF MY PHONE”

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/08/07

[Archive1/Archive2] BlackRoomSec had a great Twitter thread on death cyber plan.

Everyone, including me, should work on such plan. Their motivation to publish it started with another thread: [Archive] BlackRoomSec on Twitter: “I just unlocked a pc of a deceased person for his daughter using clues he left in a password book and a sticker on the laptop. This is better than the time I guessed Esco’s pin. PLEASE make a death cyber plan. She was hysterical crying in my arms. Happy to help but this guts me😟”.

The actual thread then started with [Archive] BlackRoomSec on Twitter: “Mine starts with a stop sign that says DO NOT SHUT OFF MY PHONE 2nd page there is a box where my Yubikey is taped and the logo which is used throughout. 3rd is a picture of my cell lock pattern drawn out.”.

The full thread is at [Wayback/Archive] Thread by @blackroomsec on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App and I got OK to quote it: [Archive] BlackRoomSec on Twitter: “@jpluimers Yes🙂” / Twitter

https://twitter.com/blackroomsec/status/1492482081208913924

So here is the full quote:
