Abilities that makes you a better developer – Hacker Noon

Posted by jpluimers on 2020/03/05

If we have passion for what we do, why not try to be a better professional every day?

Source: [WayBackAbilities that makes you a better developer – Hacker Noon

That is an interesting, but very hard question which very few people around me are afraid of trying to answer.

I think the hardest part for most developer isn’t the tech/science bits as usually they have a natural feel for natural science and formal science related topics (which I’d rather not call STEM).

I’ve a hard time to remember the STEM acronym because it means “vote” or “voice” to since I’m Dutch, and equally hard the . Also I really dislike the term “hard science” as “soft sciences” are very hard for me. So lets stick with natural science and formal science.

So if you are a developer and trouble motivating yourself to learn new things in the mathematics, algorithms & data structures, databases, computer architecture, operating systems and networks, then you will have a really really hard time.

I can understand it is tougher to motivate learning about English (and other languages), paradigms & design patterns, teamwork, or to put it in a broader perspective the human side of affairs. Those however are the areas that do not come “natural” for most developers and are in effect the ones most developers need to work on most to improve.

Doing that will make it a lot easier to work with people around you.

For myself, I still have to grow a lot in those areas even though I already have. Having originated as nerd/geek/introvert or however you want to call that direction, my natural habitat is still a silent place with little distraction with some relatively quiet people around me that help me keep focus and force me in the rhythms that are good for me. But I’ve learned to speak for large groups, write (not just posts) and have many other nice social interactions.

That growth brings so much joy and makes work so much nicer, that the effort and persistence keeps being worth every minute I put in.

Bloemencorso Bollenstreek vanwege warme winters voortaan een week eerder | NOS

Posted by jpluimers on 2020/01/22

Posted by jpluimers on 2020/01/05

Given that I’m fighting rectal cancer and am extremely low on energy, I am keeping this much shorter than I want to.

Recently, I learned that Rudy Velthuis passed away on 2019-05-13. Born on 1960-10-30, he passed away at only age 58.

After asking permission from his family, I wrote a small im memoriam.

We frequently encountered each other on-line in the Delphi community, especially in the early days when I was way more active on forums, newsgroups and chat channels. He was famous there, with good reason.

Though colloquially known as [WayBack“dentist with a strong interest in programming”, he was a great Delphi programmer and very well known for thoroughly documenting the many gaps that Embarcadero left in their documentation.

In 2009, Edwin van der Kraan and I had an opportunity to have dinner with Rudy. We met at his house, where we learned he not only ran a fully fledged dentistry practice, but also was married someone who origilally was from the Philippines. A truly happy couple they were.

In retrospect, I wish we had had met in real life more often, but I’m learning the hard way that life is finite giving you only so much time to do things.

I will remember Rudy because of his knowledge, wit and odd – but great – combination of work and interests.

In the mean time, I have asked a few archival organisations (including the WayBack machine) to archive his sites:

Some of his profiles that I archived on 20190103:

I love the “Kraftwerk – Autobahn” picture on his Stack Overflow profile page, so I included that song below the fold.

R.I.P. Mark Blomsma, R.I.P. Pepijn Smits

Posted by jpluimers on 2019/12/08

This week I learned that two people I had known from the early Delphi and C# days have passed away recently:

It’s tough to digest their passing right when starting radiation therapy next week, preparing for surgery in a few months time, my wife having surgery next week, and all of us already having a tough year behind us.

I wish to express my condolences to the families and friends of Mark and Pepijn, especially in the months to come when the world at large has moved on, but the sudden memories and pain still violently kick in.

BNNVARA – De Wereld Draait Door – Boek: Beginnen over het einde – Henk en Nina Blanken

Posted by jpluimers on 2019/10/29

Just in time for a very heavy period in my life: [WayBack] BNNVARA – De Wereld Draait Door – Boek: Beginnen over het einde – Henk en Nina Blanken

It is about changing legislation about euthanasia in cases when someone has documented that urge, but cannot execute that urge any more because of for instance Alzheimer’s disease, or brain damage because of (metastasis of) cancer.

The driving force is writer Henk Blanken who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 8 years ago, and has a very high change of getting Alzheimer’s.

From that page:

24 okt 2019

His book is available as of today: [WayBack] Beginnen over het einde – Henk Blanken – De Correspondent

Posted by jpluimers on 2019/10/25

Today I found out I most likely have rectal cancer.

I got that result by following up on my changed bowel habits, eliminating causes one by one.

Soon I will know for sure and follow proper treatments.

So as part of cancer awareness month:

Please follow up on changes in your bowel habits.
