In the series “avoid Variants when coding in Delphi”: the comparison operator

For Variant types, the = comparison operator in Delphi maps to the VarCompareValue in the Variants unit.

That function fails to handle various comparisons and for some it knows it can handle raises a VarInvalidOp through various code paths (like CheckType) to VarInvalidOp because the implementation limits itself to varEmpty..varUInt64, which I think means that these are unsupported:

varStrArg
varObject
varUStrArg
varString
varAny
varUString
varArray
varByRef

This fails when using the = operator:

What is this code supposed to do, if v1 and v2 are variant arrays with the same content?
if v1 = v2 then
  WriteLn('equal')
else
  WriteLn('not equal');

Spring4d has a function SameValue in the Spring.pas unit which handles more cases, at least the case when both operands are arrays having the same content.

Some PlantUML links I needed for complex component diagram editing

A while ago, I had to create a bit more complex component diagrams than the simple ones I used to create in PlantUML.

Some links that helped me:

Linking between packages:

  - Note I still do not understand why I cannot name a package like cloud [Back Office] as BO { .... }
Class diagrams have [WayBack] package styles (Node, Rectangle, Folder, Frame, Cloud, Database); component diagrams have various grouping keywords (package, node, folder, frame, cloud, database) which you can nest.
- Note you can perform [Component Description] as ComponentName, but not database [Database Description] as DatabaseName.
For a tool that does automatic lay-out, influencing the lay-out is always a bit of pain, see for instance:

[WayBack] PlantUML in a nutshell: Open-source tool that uses simple textual descriptions to draw UML diagrams.
You can add notes:
- to elements at a certain position (using note left of elementName, note right of ..., etc)
- the position is only applied when the note is within the same group as the element (otherwise the position is not taken into account)
- you cannot add notes to groups, but the first added note (not bound to any element) is usually close to the group name: [WayBack] Note at package not class – PlantUML Q&A [Archive.is]

PowerShell: checking minimum version

Nowadays, often your PowerShell code uses features unavailable in older PowerShell versions. When running it on a version that is too old, you usually get an error message, for instance like this:

Unable to find type [Ordered]: make sure that the assembly containing this type is loaded.

Back in the days, this was a new feature introduced in PowerShell 3.0: [WayBack] Use cases of [ordered], the new PowerShell 3.0 feature – Stack Overflow

It is way friendlier to show a message indicating the version is too old in stead of throwing this error.

That’s where the # Requires Version 3.0 directive comes in: [WayBack] about_Requires | Microsoft Docs.

Adding this line to the top of a script gives output like this on a stock Windows 7 SP1 system that has PowerShell 2.0:

# PowerShell -f List-Delphi-Installed-Packages.ps1
The script ‘List-Delphi-Installed-Packages.ps1’ cannot be run because it contained a “#requires” statement at line 1 for Windows PowerShell version 3.0. The version required by the script does not match the currently running version of Windows PowerShell version 2.0.

PowerShell: finding WSD printer details enumerating through HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SWD\DAFWSDProvider

WSD seems the way Microsoft Windows 8+ does printing, which makes it a lot harder to find the IP address of a printer, for instance to configure a Mac to print to it.

The key seems to be enumerating over HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\SWD\DAFWSDProvider.

PlantUML – Visual Studio Marketplace

This and built-in markdown support made the switch to Visual Studio code from Atom.io so much easier: [WayBack] PlantUML – Visual Studio Marketplace.

Atom.io was already on my list of tools to say good bye to: though a good project to show the versatility of the Electron Framework, over time – like Google Chrome – it had become a memory and CPU hog and a drag to use and update.

Integrating debuggers and other parts of the development life cycle involved too much fuzz, for which Visual Studio code (also known as vscode) was much easier from the start.

Probably Visual Studio code did not suffer from what the Dutch call Law of the handicap of a head start: it is much more responsive and versatile than Atom.io. Also the plugins – despite having come to the market later – feel way more mature in Visual Studio code than Atom.io.

Finally, the PlantUML support extension for vscode is so much nicer than in Atom.io, it for instance supports live updating and in addition to local rendering, rendering through a PlantUML server (see [WayBack] GitHub – plantuml/plantuml-server: PlantUML Online Server).

For a project I’m going to be in need to compare version numbers.

I’m not sure yet if I need wildcards, or can leave them out (but for partial semantic versioning, I might need them).

Installing and updating Windows PowerShell – via Microsoft Docs

Since I keep forgetting that PowerShell is part of WMF (Windows Management Framework) and about the compatibility/installation matrix: [WayBack] Installing Windows PowerShell | Microsoft Docs:

The installation package for PowerShell comes inside a WMF installer. The version of the WMF installer matches the version of PowerShell; there’s no stand alone installer for Windows PowerShell.
