I forgot to blog about this before, but 2 months ago PowerShell core came available: [WayBack] PowerShell Core 6.0: Generally Available (GA) and Supported! | PowerShell Team Blog.
[WayBack] Installing PowerShell Core on macOS and Linux | Microsoft Docs is easy (one way is through homebrew:
$ brew tap caskroom/cask
$ brew cask install powershell
If you already installed a beta, then the steps are these:
$ brew update
$ brew cask reinstall powershell
Note that after installation, it is known as pwsh (at least one of the betas named it powershell) to set PowerShell Core apart from PowerShell*:
$ pwsh --version
PowerShell v6.0.2

*pwsh versus powershell
There has been quite a discussion on the PowerShell Core repository on the rename, but I think it is for a good reason.
Too bad that during part of the beta, the old name powershell was used, but beta-time means things break every now and then.
PowerShell Core is sufficiently different from prior PowerShell versions to warrant a name change. This also makes it a lot easier to use them side-by-side.
Many other names (like posh, pcsh or psh) were considered, usually because of naming conflicts with existing tools (like posh) or easy confusion with existing shells (like pcsh and csh). A benefit on Linux/macOS is that it now ends with sh like virtually all other shells.

There still is no ps xf on Mac OS X.
You need brew install pstree for that. Then you can excute pstree which gives you a treeview of the processes running.

Most sites explaining how to decompress an xz file mention you should use unxz from the xz utils toolbox.
Running unzx on Msc OS X requires the xz formula from homebrew:
$ brew install xz
==> Downloading https://homebrew.bintray.com/bottles/xz-5.2.2.mavericks.bottle.tar.gz
######################################################################## 100.0%
==> Pouring xz-5.2.2.mavericks.bottle.tar.gz

I had this occurring on my system:
RetinaMBPro1TB:~ jeroenp$ brew update
error: unable to unlink old 'Library/ENV/pkgconfig/10.11/libcurl.pc' (Permission denied)
error: unable to unlink old 'Library/ENV/pkgconfig/10.11/libxml-2.0.pc' (Permission denied)
error: unable to unlink old 'Library/ENV/pkgconfig/10.11/sqlite3.pc' (Permission denied)
To restore the stashed changes to /usr/local run:
'cd /usr/local && git stash pop'
Already up-to-date.
This is how I solved it:
RetinaMBPro1TB:~ jeroenp$ ls -al /usr/local | grep -w Library
drwxr-xr-x+ 11 jeroenp admin 374 Mar 9 19:33 Library
RetinaMBPro1TB:~ jeroenp$ sudo chown -R $USER /usr/local/Library/
Password:
RetinaMBPro1TB:~ jeroenp$ brew update
To restore the stashed changes to /usr/local run:
'cd /usr/local && git stash pop'
Updated Homebrew from d32996d to 638d755.
==> New Formulae
...
==> Updated Formulae

The above solution is based on major python problems · Issue #48301 · Homebrew/homebrew
After that, I could install plantuml (which requires java, just so you know) so now I can create SVGs from it locally:
plantuml -tsvg PSO.network-diagram.PlantUML.txt
Note I had to edit the formula so it installs plantuml-8037 or higher (the git version back then installed plantuml-8031) as it fixed a namespace bug. Since plantuml releases often, be prepared to do some version fiddling.

Skip the built-in curl and directly go to the homebrew one:
$ brew update
$ brew upgrade
$ brew install curl --with-nghttp2

Homebrew no longer needs to have ownership of /usr/local. If you wish you can
return /usr/local to its default ownership with:
sudo chown root:wheel /usr/local
Reason: the log does look funny, see below.

Adobe marketing scam
I don’t want Acrobat/Adobe Reader on my Mac. Period.
But Preview will show some PDF files as “For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio in Acrobat 9 or Adobe Reader 9, or later.” or “For the best experience, open this PDF portfolio in Acrobat X or Adobe Reader X, or later.”
This is some Adobe marketing scam where they generate a PDF file actually as a portfolio of PDF files having the first PDF being “marketing” message.
So I needed the pdf-tools on my Mac for which many sites suggest to use brew install pdf-tools. That worked not so well:
$ brew install pdf-tools
Error: No available formula with the name "pdf-tools"
==> Searching for similarly named formulae...
This similarly named formula was found:
mupdf-tools
To install it, run:
brew install mupdf-tools
==> Searching taps...
This formula was found in a tap:
homebrew/emacs/pdf-tools
To install it, run:
brew install homebrew/emacs/pdf-tools
Searching for “Error: No available formula with the name” “pdf-tools” didn’t return useful results but looking for brew “pdf-tools” gone revealed pdf-tools: move to homebrew/emacs · wingyplus/homebrew@6e73af9 indicating the command should indeed be brew install homebrew/emacs/pdf-tools however that also ended up failing, in fact with multiple errors:
==> make server/epdfinfo
Error: No available formula with the name "homebrew/dupes/tcl-tk"
Please tap it and then try again: brew tap homebrew/dupes
==> Searching for similarly named formulae...
Error: No similarly named formulae found.
==> Searching taps...
Error: No formulae found in taps.
After doing abrew tap homebrew/dupes it finally worked.

If you see the error below when running brew update, then you bumped in a small brew glitch [WayBack]. The solution is usually to just run brew update again [WayBack] (thanks Ashley Willis [WayBack]) and it will likely run fine:
$ brew update

Woof is a small simple stupid webserver that can easily be invoked on a single file. Your partner can access the file with tools he trusts (e.g. wget). No need to enter passwords on keyboards where you don’t know about keyboard sniffers, no need to start a huge lot of infrastructure, just do a

tell the recipient the URL woof spits out. When he got that file, woof will quit and everything is done.And when someone wants to send you a file, woof has a switch to offer itself, so he can get woof and offer a file to you. …
Woof needs Python on a unix’ish operating system. Some people have used it successfully on Windows within the cygwin environment.
