When Windows suddenly starts mixing up keys for various applications.

Since:

  • many people use the left-alt key as it as it is more accessible
  • development tools uses a lot of Alt-Shift based keyboard shortcuts
  • Windows by default has the Left Alt+Shift shortcut enabled to switch language+keyboard layout combinations
  • In most countries, Windows by default has more than one language+keyboard combination installed
  • Windows remembers per application instance which language+keyboard combination is used

every now and then you will get strange characters in only your development tools.

You can change this Windows setting, but be aware that every now and then, various Windows versions will re-enable the Left Alt+Shift even if you have previously disabled it. As of Windows 7 this occurs far less often, but still seems to occur.

OS X Mountain Lion and up: Zoom content on the screen

Accessibiity -> Zoom -> enable checkbox” class=”size-medium” /> Preferences -> Accessibiity -> Zoom -> enable checkbox

I didn’t know this was built-in since Mountain Lion and up, but it is, is startable from the keyboard and it’s tremendously convenient when presenting: [WayBack]: OS X Mountain Lion: Zoom content on the screen.

If it had function keys, I might have ordered it, but in case anyone is still interested: order before the end of July as they will likely not do a re-run of this unique project: [Archive.is] Brand New Model F Keyboards – The Model M Predecessor: Mechanical Capacitive Buckling Spring Keyboards with NKRO.

Model F quality is much better than Model M, which is way better than anything manufactured after that. Just compare the spring mechanisms below.

GExperts – when your predecessor has put it under the Tools menu

I totally forgot that GExperts can be under the Tools men

GExperts IDE configuration

GExperts IDE configurationu (I’m so accustomed that Alt-X is GExperts and Alt-M is ModelMaker Code Explorer).

These keyboard shortcuts are only assigned when you install GExperts before you install ModelMaker Code Explorer.

If you reverse, then you have to fiddle by removing the ModelMaker Code Explorer expert, then re-add it.

Anyway: you can configure this in the “IDE” tab of the GExperts Configuration.

After that you have to restart the Delphi IDE to reflect the change.

Ctrl-T — www.voidtools.com • View topic – Everything window is ‘Always On Top’

If you use everything search from VoidTools, then don’t be surprised that pressing Ctrl-T makes it “Always On Top”:

Of course this is not defined in “Tools” -> “Options”.

I forgot in which version this was introduced, as in the past I never stumbled over it on keyboards that have Ctrl and Alt reversed.

Apple TV needs iTunes

A while ago, my model A1469 3rd generation Apple TV had a slowly blinking white light but nothing displayed over HDMI any more, so I searched for Apple TV slow blinking white and

Reading Restoring your Apple TV (when its white light is flashing) | Comics and gadgets, I opted for the first option: a soft-restart of the Apple TV. To do that you have to press menu+down on the Apple Remote at the same time for 5+ seconds, then wait for the Apple TV to restart. That initially did show an image over HDMI which later disappeared. I didn’t get the image at first as I thought it was looking for iTunes media over USB (like from an iPhone or iPad), so I waited for a time-out to occur.

After a while that image disappeared and the Apple TV white LED started rapidly flashing. Not good.

Later I found the image was portraying a USB cable not having a connection to an iTunes logo and some dark grey text on a black background pointing to support.apple.com/appletv/restore.

I didn’t see that at first as the room was a bit brightly lit since we had a lot of sun that day so this non-descriptive image with grey on black UX worked really well.

Conclusion: I had to restore the Apple TV which I thought would be straight-forward as it had been connected to my iCloud account.

Some notes on modifying NIB files on Mac OS X to add/change shortcuts

One of the nitpicks in VMware Fusion is that it has no keyboard shortcut for Resume or Suspend. I was trying to add Command-R and Command-S for those but that didn’t work out.
