WayBack throwing “Wayback Exception An unknown exception has occurred. Unexpected Error” usually indicates a cookie problem

If saving a web-page on the WayBack machine throws you this error on any site:

Wayback Exception

 

An unknown exception has occurred. Unexpected Error

Then usually the cause is having too many cookies.

Clean your cookies for web.archive.org, then try again.

The day that the internet archive was down for a few hours – time to sponsor them.

In an era where we’ve become dependent on 24/7 communications and availability of the internet, but even more so on archives of information that appeared, became fake and then denied, the Internet Archive (including the WayBack machine) was down for a few hours because of a PGE power outage in San Francisco.

(Posted late because, well the WordPress.com “missed schedule” bug is back)

Encoding horror: Wayback Machine “Sorry.This snapshot cannot be displayed due to an internal error.”

Sorry.This snapshot cannot be displayed due to an internal error.

When the Wayback Machine tries to display the archived https://plus.google.com/+KristianKöhntopp/posts/2yw9QFgCdtx which is about Unicode encoding horror.

The real horror? This used to work in the past.

Luckily it’s archived on https://archive.fo/b36gn

Internet Archive Wayback machine – New Beta Release Allows Users to Keyword Search

I totally missed this because most of my WayBack activity is through the JavaScript buttons on my Chrome toolbar, so here it is:

A month ago, the WayBack machine introduced a new beta that allows for searching inside the archives.

At the CodeRage III on-line virtual conference, I have done 4 sessions. CodeRage III logo
For me, it was the first time speaking at conference done this way.
A few things were different:

  • Sessions were 45 minutes presenting in stead of the normal 60 minutes
  • The main body of the session was pre-recorded, the 15 minute Q&A was live
  • I had to learn Camtasia
  • The broadcasts were done through LiveMeeting
