Updating our Philips BDP5x00 BlueRay/DVD player, Philips PFL767x 3D TV and MyRemote apps for Android & iOS

Posted by jpluimers on 2012/06/01

Since the auto-update nor manual update feature of Philips devices over the internet never seems to work:

Today is Philips firmware using USB stick and app update time (:

One bummer is that the “firmware installation instructions” do not mention that you have to start with a cold boot one time before updating the devices. If you don’t, then the devices (especially the TV’s) do not recognize there is an update available.

So: always start with cutting the power (either by switch or by plugging the cable) then enabling power again. You only need to do this once before plugging in a USB stick with the update.

Another bummer there is that Philips does not publish direct links on their site either, so you have to browse through pages, select languages, then download the stuff. But the actual files are still static.

So below are the URLs of the pages and download links I used.

Note the links have been static, even over firmware versions.

Some tips on the links of the Philips site above:

  1. Replace the 42 in the URLs with the screen size of your TV to get the download specifically for your TV.
  2. Replace DEU or ENG in the URLs with your own language abbreviation to try getting it in your language.
This is the list of language codes and languages that Philips uses: Read the rest of this entry »

Why is LTE equipment being installed in an Apple Store? — Engadget

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/08/17

Interesting: is Apple going to include LTE in their next product line?

Not that we will have LTE in The Netherlands soon, we won’t, we only have one test network at Tele2 :)

Duh: iPad safari search inside is easy!

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/03/14

The old iOS version of safari had no way of searching inside a page so I never took the time to find out (pun intended) if it was added in the new iOS.

But: I still missed this obvious feature, and – after finding out how – was amazed it is so easy.

As GilsMethod points out, just use the search box: in addition with a list of search suggestions, it comes up with a list of matches for the current page too.

iPad/iPhone Quick Tip: Enabling Multiple Google Calendars: Apple News, Tips and Reviews «

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/02/21

Most tips (like this one) I found to sync multiple Google Calendars to your iPad/iPhone don’t work any more.

This  iPad Quick Tip: Enabling Multiple Google Calendars by Geoffrey Goetz works well.

Summary:

  1. if you have iOS 3.x, then you need to sync using CalDAV
  2. if you have iOS 4.x, then you can sync using Google Calendar Sync.

In both cases, you need to visit the iPhoneSelect page to enable the calendars you wish to see on your iPad/iPhone.

Tthe actual iPhoneSelect page depends on how you use Google Calendar:

  1. Regular Google Calendar:
    https://www.google.com/calendar/iphoneselect
  2. Google Apps Calendar:
    https://www.google.com/calendar/hosted/your_domain/iphoneselect
replacing ‘your_domain’ with your actual domain name.

Simple when you know how :-)

Now hopefully Geoffrey Goetz’ tip becomes more popular in the search rankings.
