Whereas Windows 7 was really fast, Windows 8.1 on my ThinkPad W701 is very slow in an erratic way.
Need to check out this:
Windows 8.1 proves to be extremely slow on their computers, with Microsoft yet to address the problem with a workaround or a patch.
According to some posts on Microsoft’s Community forums, this is mostly happening on Lenovo laptops and the fastest way to deal with performance issues is to uninstall the “Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework” from the device manager.
In addition, you need to access the BIOS menu and in the “Configuration” screen, make sure you disable the DPIF option to turn it off completely until Microsoft comes up with a fully-working fix.

A decade ago, Lenovo had top-notch IPS displays with (back then high) DPI of 133 in some of their laptops called FlexView and FFS.
The IPS ThinkPad history is this: Read the rest of this entry »

Earlier this week, I posted abut ThinkPad W701: Win7 Ultimate x64 suddenly only saw 8GB RAM of 16GB (via: [H]ard|Forum).
One of the search results in my query indicated it would be possible to put 32GB in it.
That’s nice, as the official Lenovo ThinkPad W701 specs and Lenovo ThinkPad W701 2500 Overview & Specs – Laptops – CNET Reviews indicate it should max out with 16GB.
This Google search returns lots of results indicating people actually run it with 32GB RAM using 4x8GB memory modules:

This recently happened to me, but not sure when it started:
My ThinkPad W701 had 16GB of RAM, and everything worked fine for about 2 years, but now the BIOS and Windows only saw 8GB of it.
The odd thing: SpeedFan would see 4 memory modules of 4 gigabyte each for a total of 16 gigabyte.
This solution helped:
the easiest (and most embarrassing) fix worked – just took out the new RAM sticks and re-seated them into different sockets instantly fixed the problem.
The steps I followed: Read the rest of this entry »

Last week this was in HDD news:
I asked it before 6 months ago, and wonder: how long will it take for 12.5 mm 2.5 inch SATA HDDs to arrive on the market that have 1.5 TB or more capacity?
Yes, I know about the WD20NPVT, but the WD20NPVT is 2.5 inch and 15 mm high.

Since about 9 months, 2.5 inch notebook drives ship that have 500 gigabyte platters.
With that technology, these drives ship:
they easily could manufacture these configurations:

Dang this won’t work:
The ThinkPad W700/W701 DisplayPort is a DisplayPort-only source, not a Dual-Mode source, and thus cannot support the DisplayPort adapter cables.

This might not be strictly legal, but it is supposed to be possible to run the retail OS X Lion 10.7 under VMware Workstation 8 (or VMware Fusion 4) and VMware Workstation 7.1.4 (or VMware Player 3.1.4) on a regular PC (if that PC Supports VT) running Windows 7 x64.
Since Apple MacBook still don’t come with a TrackPoint (and having suffered from RSI, that is about the only pointing device I can use) there are only two options for me:
