Some notes on multi-touch and Windows

While fooling around with Microsoft Surface, you are astonished with the number of fingers it supports: 10 is no problem on the Samsung SUR40 which can also do full HD resolution (more specs here).

Not so with the standard Windows 7 touch support: that has only 2.

As I want to increase that to better mimic the development environment to the actual environment a few notes:

How to install Windows 7 on a virtual hard disk (VHD) in 10 steps (via: Guides & Tutorials)

Handy when working with Microsoft Surface: install your development environment on a separate VHD that you can boot as your physical machine (Microsoft Surface SDK does not like being run in a Virtual Machine):

If you accept the constraints described above, I propose the following procedure, which I think is the easiest way to install Windows 7 on a virtual disk in multi-boot

Note: Within the VHD you can still access all the files on your physical HD.

Why can’t I move the Program Files directory via the unattend file? – via: The Old New Thing – Site Home – MSDN Blogs

You cannot move the C:\Program Files directory to another volume without installing Windows on that volume.

A small abstract from the explanation by Raymond Chen: The symbiotic relation between C:\Windows\WinSxS and C:\Program Files through NTFS hard links prevents you to move C:\Program Files (nor WinSxS) to a different disk volume. Both directories need to be on the same volume because of the NTFS hard link limitation.

NTFS hardlinks do save a ton of diskspace, even though WinSxS will keep growing over time, which means you need to do some careful disk volume planning, especially on SSD drives.
