When are the 12.5mm 1.5 TB and 14.8mm 2 TB notebook drives coming? (via: Marvell 4Q 2012 – Hard Drives Coming Back, SSD Controller Sales Double – Storage Forums)

Since about 9 months, 2.5 inch notebook drives ship that have 500 gigabyte platters.
With that technology, these drives ship:
- 1 platter of 500 gigabyte into the 7 mm thick Hitachi Travelstar Z7K500
- 2 platters of 500 gigabyte into the 9.5 mm thick 1 TB drive: Samsung M8 HN-M101MBB or Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1TB WD10JPVT (both compared at NotebookReview)
they easily could manufacture these configurations:
- 3 platters of 500 gigabyte into a 12.5 mm thick 1.5 TB drive
(the currently only available 1.5 TB notebook drive is 14.8 mm thick: Seagate ST1500LM003) - 4 platters of 500 gigabyte into a 14.8 mm thick 2 TB drive
this one almost fits a MacBook (people buy an incase cover to make the MacBook even to fit the 14.8 mm thick drive)
They already made the bump to 9 mm thick 2 platter 1 TB drives (from the 3 platter 12.5 mm thick in the Samsung SpinPoint MT2 1TB HM100UI and Western Digital WD10TPVT and WD10TEVT to the 9mm thick HN-M101MBB and WD10JPVT).
So – given the 4 platter 14.8 mm thick Seagate ST1500LM003 1.5 TB drive has been on the market for 9 months – a logical question is: when are bigger drives becoming available in the current thicknesses? User [ETA]MrSpadge wonders about the same:
There are also 1 TB consumer oriented 3-platter drives with 12.5 mm, which cost about the same as their newer 2-platter brothers of the same capacity. However, using the same case etc. they could easily offer 1.5 TB now for about the same production cost -> higher win margin. Sure, the market for external drives is not as large as the one for “external + internal”.. yet if I were in charge there I’d try my luck with such an offer (*).

(*) That’s the right time to say “And that’s why you’re not in charge there!”
So: when are those 12.5 mm high 1.5 TB and 14.8 mm high 2 TB notebook drives going to arrive?
DanWat1234 has been expecting them for about 6 months, PhilFlow has for about 3 months. So is is getting time.
Marvell (leading supplier of HDD technology) is clearly ready for it :)
They are also ready for the proposed 5 mm thick (or rather thin) proposed drive height as found on Xbit.
