I wrote about imposter syndrome before; this diagram describes how I sometimes feel

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/02/07

Every now and then, I still find it hard to realise how what I know relates to the knowledge of others.

It has to do with imposter syndrome, which many people in IT suffer from, as the field can be so overwhelming and make us so little.

So I was glad that Jens Fudge taught a conference session on imposter syndrome fall 2021, which I mentioned a few months ago in Chris Bensen on Twitter: “I just had a notion about they cycle I go through with every project I have ever worked on so I drew this up before I forgot it. I hope everyone can read it.… “.

Earlier, my post If you think everyone has such an organised life, and you feel so lost exactly reflects how I feel sometimes when imposter syndrome kicks in.

When it does, the belowgraph posted in [Archive] Susan L. Benear on Twitter: “This is what it took me until my last year of grad school to realize. I’m still regularly overwhelmed by how much I don’t know, but I no longer suffer from the delusion that everyone else in my position knows 5x more than me. ” / Twitter very much helps me.

It also helps to realise this: [Archive] Frau Sommersprosse on Twitter: “Wir leben in einer schnellen Gesellschaft. / Twitter which translates as

We live in a fast paced society. In private, too, it often has to be “higher, faster, further” and more and more.

Stop and think of all the good that you have.

Just because people supposedly have more doesn’t make them happier.

Gratitude and humility bring peace of mind.

To which I responded both that it is related to imposter syndrome and that [Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers on Twitter: “@4Sprosse You are valid:” / Twitter.

You are valid, no matter how awful you feel (thanks [Archive] Willem Wouda on Twitter: “Goedemorgen, het is donderdag. Voor iedereen die wil en voor hen die denken er geen nodig te hebben een #ddk #DikkeDonderdagKnuffel ” / Twitter!), which I traced back to:

Some more Compuserve memories

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/01/20

Some years ago, I wrote CompuServe’s forums, which still exist, are finally shutting down on 20171215.

Getting older and various people passing away made me relive some of the CompuServe memories where I used to be [Wayback/Archive] “100013,1443”.

Semi-offline access software like TapCIS and later OzCIS and OzWin helped lessening the bill of mainly getting to the CompuServe forums BPROGA that hosted Turbo Pascal (and later PASCAL for Borland Pascal plus Delphi), BORGMBH (Borland Germany)  and PCVENB (for Turbo Power Software: a back then – large supplier of tools and libraries – later acquired by a casino software company) learned to know a few TeamB members and other (now) oldies like Neil J. Rubenking.

TeamB members coming to mind: Pat Ritchey, Kurt B. Barthelmess, Rudy Velthuis, David Nottage, Steve Fischkoff, Nick Hodges, Steve Schafer, Paul A. LeBlanc and others (I wish someone had a full list of past members).

Enabling GitHub pages to a HTML or markdown GitHub project is dead easy: Delphi deadlockempire is now hosted on github.io

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/01/10

A while ago I wrote about Setting up a GitHub project so it is served over https as a github.io and a custom subdomain.

Doing the full “host on your custom domain” route was a big tougher than I hoped for, so I totally forgot how easy it is to convert an existing HTML or markdown documentation repository to use GitHub pages without a custom domain.

I needed it for the Delphi version of the DeadLockEmpire (see links below, originally it was an interactive tutorial game focusing on the C# language and .NET runtime), as I am trying to get as much as my stuff published and hosted in a manner that will outlive me (I still have a pretty high chance of the rectum cancer metastases returning).

Enabling GitHub Pages on your repository is almost as easy as hosting a page through raw.githack.com (where I already hosted raw.githack.com/jpluimers/deadlockempire.github.io/feature/Delphi-language-and-Delphi-RTL/index.html as raw.githack.com/jpluimers/deadlockempire.github.io/feature/Delphi-language-and-Delphi-RTL/index.html and rawcdn.githack.com/jpluimers/deadlockempire.github.io/feature/Delphi-language-and-Delphi-RTL/index.html).

This is how easy it was to get it hosted as [Wayback/Archive] jpluimers.github.io/deadlockempire.github.io:

  1. In my [Wayback/Archive] jpluimers/deadlockempire.github.io: The Deadlock Empire: Slay dragons, learn concurrency! repository, go to the Settings tab, then click on Pages:
DeadLockEmpire Settings tab, Pages configuration None

DeadLockEmpire Settings tab, Pages configuration None.

Here you see “None” as value for the branch to be published as GitHub Pages.

  2. Here I have chosen the Branch “feature/Delphi-language-and-Delphi-RTL” to be published, and am about to press “Save” (full screenshot below):
DeadLockEmpire Pages selecting the correct branch

DeadLockEmpire Pages selecting the correct branch

  3. After pressing “Save“, the site gets published (it takes about a minute for that to complete) at [Wayback/Archive] jpluimers.github.io/deadlockempire.github.io:
DeadLockEmpire Pages the correct branch has been saved

DeadLockEmpire Pages the correct branch has been saved which will automagically publish it.

That was it. No more steps.

Each new commit in the selected branch will auto-publish as well.

xahteiwi.eu – Meaningless Metrics, Treacherous Targets

Posted by jpluimers on 2022/12/15

Food for thought:

[Wayback] xahteiwi.eu – Meaningless Metrics, Treacherous Targets

A common feature of organizations in the software technology industry (but certainly not only in that industry) is their fixation on metrics, measurements, and quantifiers. I understand that this is frequently done and advocated for in the spirit of making management more objective, less arbitrary, more scientific, and perhaps fairer. But since they say that the road to hell is often paved with good intentions, here’s a quick summary of what we know about about the undesirable side effects of such an approach.

Basically, when the metric becomes the goal, it will not reliably measure the underlying figures any more.

By [Archive] Florian Haas on Twitter: “I wrote something long-ish on metrics over the weekend. I’m pretty certain this won’t go unchallenged, as people tend to have strong opinions on this. 🙂 “.

Via [Archive] Kristian Köhntopp on Twitter: “In writing this, @xahteiwi had probably done more for the advancement of SRE as a practice than one hundred conference talks could do. Thanks for that.… “.

Thinking about you today Paweł

Posted by jpluimers on 2022/12/13

Today it is 5 years ago that Paweł passed away. For me it is hard to believe that I’m still around and this post feels like yesterday: R.I.P. Paweł Głowacki – you will be dearly missed, not just in the Delphi community

Kamer van Koophandel: de Non-Mailing-Indicator

Posted by jpluimers on 2022/11/28

I wish they had mailed me about this: [Wayback/Archive] De Non-Mailing-Indicator
