One day I will find back my Casio 79QGS-39 Universal Calendar watch from the 1980s

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/09/08

I think it’s Jan Wildeboer that referred me to the vongestern Blog: Smartwatch 1986: Casio DBX-100 [WayBack] entry.

It’s about database watches (and also shows the DB-520 and DBC-610) which were of the first smart watch generations and reminded me I’ve misplaced my Casio 79QGS-39 Universal Calendar digital LCD watch from the same era (mine was chrome unlike some of the Casio 79QGS-39 images  around).

Back then smart watches were focusing on very few things, but did them well, unlike today where they try to be jack of all trades: Niemand braucht Computer in Uhren. Der Artikel fängt langsam an, aber macht gute Punkte zum Ende hin. – Kristian Köhntopp – Google+ [WayBack]

Hopefully one day I’ll find my smart watch back, get it working and can post some pictures. The battery should be easy to replace though:

DIY pick and place machine from parts of scanner, inkjet printer, DVD player and vaccuum pump – Open Theremin – Urs Gaudenz

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/01/30

Urs Gaudenz manufactures Open.Theremin kits using his do it yourself pick and place machine which he built from low cost scanner, ink jet printer, DVD player mechanics and some Arduino controlling. Even his solder oven is Arduino controlled!

This is months of work showing a work flow in a 11 minute youtube video. Well done!

DEF CON 22 – Dan Kaminsky – Secure Random by Default – YouTube

Posted by jpluimers on 2016/02/25

Just while I was watching a nice DEFCON video about security

I came across these two links:

It really looks like too many companies are not genuinely interested in your security.

(Prices of Crazyradio PA devices on Amazon USA didn’t just go through the roof: they ran out of them)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ bot not ¯\_㋡_/¯ or using Katakana for Smileys

Posted by jpluimers on 2015/12/06

Recently I see a lot of people using the ¯_(ツ)_/¯  emoticon as a meme for shrugging arms (though *shrug* is both shorter and easier to type).

It’s based on the Tsu kana (which is has no meaning by itself, but is a mora indicating a glottal stop) and seems to be in use since 2011.

There is also the Shi kana (which also resembles a smiling face), which would lead to ¯_(シ)_/¯.

The fun part is that the for Shi, Wikpedia mentions ㋛ (which is basically Shi enclosed in a circle) it would become ¯_㋛_/¯ which is as short as *shrug* but more visual.

But for Tsu, Wikipedia doesn’t mention ㋡ (maybe coincidentally, the Tsu enclosed in a circle Wiktionary page isn’t there yet as well) which would make ¯_㋡_/¯, again as short as *shrug* but more visual and the one I would prefer.

The below Unicode code points were all added in 1993, quite some time before they got used as emoticons:

PS: there is a little visual trick to cope with shi, tsu, so and n: watch the stroke order and top/left line.
