I need to check this out: KBOX — a miniature Linux distribution integrated with a terminal for non-rooted Android devices

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/09/12

On my research list:

I need to check out KBOX — a miniature Linux distribution integrated with a terminal for non-rooted Android devices.

It seems to add a lot of normal unix/Linux commands to your Android terminal emulator, but does not require root access.

I usually use a Windows or Mac system to browse the files on my Android device, but this should be much more convenient and aid both software developers and power users.

Now I need a remote ssh access to my Android device (:

▶ How to pair a desktop or laptop to youtube.com/pair (via: YouTube; uses Opera Mobile Emulator)

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/08/04

Trick via: ▶ How to pair a desktop or laptop to youtube.com/pair – YouTube.

This trick uses the Opera Mobile Emulator.

Note that not all settings work. The Asus Nexus 7 emulator worked, but custom didn’t always work (that would open m.youtube.com as www.youtube.com/?nomobile=1 hence switching off the mobile client).

When following the steps at Pair your mobile device to your TV – YouTube Help, you are directed to m.youtube.com/select_site to select your TV and enter a pairing code.

Usually you need to retry playing a video a few times: my Philips 42PFI7676H-12 didn’t always work at first (maybe playing back streamed video inside the emulator is not supported, but telling Youtube to pass the play request to your TV is), whereas with my Google Nexus 4 it always works.

You can even pair one computer to another: on the computer that emulates the TV, browse to www.youtube.com/leanback.

Android Play download race condition?

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/07/09

I submitted the report below to Google. What do you think, race condition?

I think this is a race condition somewhere.

Steps to reproduce:
1- Play notifies you there are multiple Apps (preferably many) that need manually updating
2- Manually select the first app and start the download for it
3- While the app is downloading, and there are more apps to update, perform step 2 for the remaining apps
4- Every some apps, there will be an app in the list that stalls before the percentage counter becomes visible (usually it displays “Downloading” forever)

This problem does not reproduce if:
A- there is only one app to download
B- if (while other apps are downloading) you do not select a fresh app to update

It does not matter if this is over WiFi, or mobile data connection. Soft/Hard rebooting the device does not help either, nor the version of the Play app (it has been this case for at least a couple of months, I only found time now to investigate the full matrix of reproducible steps, and factors influencing reproducability).

Time consuming workaround: cancel the stuck download, and retry, then continue with the list of other apps.

Google Nexus 4: How to Undo “Android sync of Google Contacts will sometimes auto-merge contacts with the same last-names”

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/04/05

On my brand new Google Nexus 4, I had this problem that some contacts were merged based on their last name.

They were merged only on the phone: at the Google Contacts web page, they still were separate.

The issue was very much “in my face”, as one of the merges was my brother and mother. For which I am pretty sure they are separate entities, both alive and kicking.

Browsing for a solution, I found these links (the first one got me to the others):

The issue is still there (I synced 3 weeks ago).

The solution is per device (the sync breaks on your device, not on Google Contacts).

The steps of the solution were not completely clear, so below are screenshots. Click on each screenshot to get a larger crisp 768×1280 HD image. Read the rest of this entry »

How to take a screenshot on the Nexus 4 | How To – CNET

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/03/27

Thanks Jason Cipriani – CNET:

To take a screenshot on the Nexus 4, press and hold down the power and volume down buttons at the exact same time. After a few seconds you’ll feel a vibration on your device and you’ll see the screenshot minimize into the notification tray. Pulling down the notification tray will in turn allow you to quickly share the picture.

TreeMap DiskUsage view Android Apps on Google Play

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/01/26

If you want to view a TreeMap of your Android device then DiskUsage – Android Apps on Google Play is a great choice.

Simple, easy to use, fast.

It showed me that my SD-Card suddenly was almost full because /sdcard/LOST.DIR contained a 2 gigabyte file full of garbage.
