Email Handling and vBulletin Cloud – vBulletin Community Forum

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/08/25

For my link archive: [Wayback/Archive] Email Handling and vBulletin Cloud – vBulletin Community Forum.

  • Asking your end users to white list your email address and the Sendgrid IP (167.89.58.99) can help alleviate the issues.

I didn’t know the above but bumped into an issue because I didn’t know a supplier had moved to vBulletin Cloud, my account password stopped being accepted and my account password reset messages would not arrive.

So I wrote this as part of a mail to sort this out, and it was confirmed to be correct:

Then I re-checked a few connection refusals that appeared close to the password reset tries. Not sure if this a pattern, but a few of them had this:
2022-02-20T19:41:42.999415+01:00 snap sendmail[24314]: NOQUEUE: connect from o1678958x99.outbound-mail.sendgrid.net [167.89.58.99]

From the linked page I got to https://www.spamcop.net/w3m?action=blcheck&ip=167.89.58.99 indicating

167.89.58.99 listed in bl.spamcop.net (127.0.0.2)

If there are no reports of ongoing objectionable email from this system it will be delisted automatically in approximately 13 hours.

Causes of listing
  • System has sent mail to SpamCop spam traps in the past week (spam traps are secret, no reports or evidence are provided by SpamCop)

Express-delisting is not available

Listing History

In the past 44.4 days, it has been listed 12 times for a total of 13.3 days

Can you check if the forum software uses sendgrid?

The confirmation linked to the first post in this blog entry on how to whitelist the SendGrid outgoing IP-address.

One thing I wonder: why does SendGrid use a single outgoing IP-address? If it gets blacklisted, many of their clients have problems.

Anyway: before adding the entry to my whitelist, the problem had resolved itself, and the blacklist entries were done:

Is there a way to increase the rate at which Gmail fetches mail from another account? – Web Applications Stack Exchange

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/02/05

[WayBack] Is there a way to increase the rate at which Gmail fetches mail from another account? – Web Applications Stack Exchange got a nice follow-up on Twitter:

This is way better than suggestions from the past: increase the frequency in which email arrives at the POP3 account.

From a while back, but still relevant as the speed of the GMail web-UI still has not improved.

Outlook 2013 cannot logon to gmail any more

Posted by jpluimers on 2019/09/20

A problem on a PC I did not use often: as of a sudden, Outlook 2013 could not access a gmail account any more.

Luckily, Outlook showed me this message in a dialog box:

Please log in via your web browser: https://support.google.com/mail/accounts/answer/78754 (Failure)

This directed me to [WayBack] Use IMAP to check Gmail on other email clients – Gmail Help

In turn that pointed to [WayBack] Let less secure apps access your account – Google Account Help

Finally that one indicated the configuration page changed to https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps

This is similar to the cause of “the user name or password for imap.gmail is incorrect” – iPad, iPod or iPhone with iOS < 7

It all comes down to gmail forcing OAUTH2: [WayBack] tls – Why doesn’t outlook 2013 meet modern security standards? – Information Security Stack Exchange

My message was blocked – Google Product Forums

Posted by jpluimers on 2019/03/18

Cool: https://support.google.com/mail/?p=RfcMessageNonCompliant

So Google does RFC checkking: [Archive.isMy message was blocked – Google Product Forums and shows bot the above link and this in the SMTP protocol:

“Our system has detected that this message is not RFC 5322 compliant,”

After that is the actual reason (for instance no From).

It looks like gmail finally understands Outlook Calendar entries

Posted by jpluimers on 2018/11/12

For a very long time, gMail did nothing with Outlook Calendar entires.

So I had to view at the message source, then translate them to Google Calendar entries myself.

--_000_430b30b9ffd74d959b74ab7ba778b487ultrawarenl_
Content-Type: text/calendar; charset="utf-8"; method=REQUEST
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

...

As of late, they seem to be processed into Google Calendar compatible entries. Nice!

How to Add Your Gmail Account to Outlook 2013 and 2016 Using IMAP

Posted by jpluimers on 2018/05/11

If you use Outlook to check and manage your email, you can easily use it to check your Gmail account as well. You can set up your Gmail account to allow you to synchronize email across multiple machines using email clients instead of a browser.

Oh: you need to lower your Gmail security for Outlook 2013 as the latter isn’t up to par on security. For that, follow similar steps like in “the user name or password for imap.gmail is incorrect” – iPad, iPod or iPhone with iOS < 7.
