Still glad I got a few of [WayBack] GL-AR300M – GL.iNet: it makes travel life so much easier when you cannot use tethering.
I got the model GL-AR300M with external antennas (the GL-AR300M only has internal ones with a much shorter range).
Powered over USB, it runs OpenWRT and can NAT a local network towards an external network on the WAN, WiFi or (via USB) 3G/4G modem.
Despite doing only 2.4Ghz, it was a life saver in many occasions (there is a 5Ghz model, but it has over heating issues).

[WayBack] RB450G and “..could not get answer from dns server” – MikroTik: I do not see a default route. It would be the route with “dst-address=0.0.0.0/0“.

I keep a text file with the changes I’ve made after a fresh install and I keep the file updated as I make changes.
Re-configuring the router after that takes a bit of time, but it is not that bad. Toastman’s method (here) noted above as well as the methods described here and here can also be used, but I haven’t tried them.

nvram export –set >config.txt
This outputs the complete setup in useable text form, each line beginning with “nvram set”. This means it’s ready to input to the router without having to add the “nvram set” to every line. You could do this by ssh or telnet.
NOTE – you can only restore the whole config file to the original router. To configure a different router you need to cherry pick the important lines (see below)
e.g.
nvram set clkfreq=480,240,120
nvram set wl0_country=AU
nvram set wan_domain=freewifi
nvram commit

By now I should have had plenty of time to try out an ARM based pfSense multi-WAN router like the [WayBack] Netgate SG-3100 is an ARM based pfSense Firewall Appliance.
So this is a reminder for myself to write down more detailed experiences than the summary at [WayBack]Netgate SG-3100 pfSense Security Gateway Appliance.
It is in the Mikrotik price range, but each time I use those I bump into mysterious RouterOS issues that only I seem to have.

When one of the machine isn’t active for a while it seems to disappear. Even when it’s active some of the machines have intermittent errors pinging it as like every 10-30 seconds one of these ping results appear:

Sometimes even a simple
Request timeout for icmp_seq 6900
So I need to dig into ICMP “Redirect Host” .
It might be a simple ARP thing like mac mini – Why the different results for ping? Or why is the Time Capsule getting involved? – Ask Different [WayBack] but like usual stuff I bump into is of a more complex kind so I’ve archived at least these:
