Ookla speedtest CLI for Windows has some undocumented arguments to accept license and GDPR

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/10/11

I had speedtest-cli running on MacOS and various Linux machines, but not yet on Windows (see for instance my post Ubuntu: Fixing the myserious “Failed to stop apt-daily.timer: Connection timed out”).

[Wayback/Archive] Install and Test Internet Speed with Speedtest CLI Command Line – NEXTOFWINDOWS.COM reminded me there is a Speedtest CLI for Windows download at at [Wayback/Archive] Speedtest CLI: Internet speed test for the command line, but I am a an automation/scripting/devops person, so luckily there are also [Wayback/Archive] Chocolatey Software | Speedtest by Ookla (don’t get [Wayback/Archive] Ookla.Speedtest download, as that is the GUI version).

Both the Chocolatey and winget packages are named the same, so that is quite confusing. This is how I have set them apart:

Reminder to self: check if FritzOS 7.50 has become available for Fritz!Box 7490

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/03/31

This post is a reminder to myself to check if Fritz!Box 7490 can be upgraded to the FritzOS (sometimes spelled Fritz!OS or FRITZ!OS) 7.50, which is the firmware that introduced WireGuard on various Fritz!Box models.

Initially it wasn’t available for the wildly popular Fritz!Box 7490 series which, at the time of writing was still a current Fritz!Box model, has been very popular in The Netherlands because of (now defunct) internet provider XS4ALL started shipping it to customers almost 10 years ago ([Wayback/Archive] Property:XS4ALL – BoxMatrix). Currently Fritz!Box products are offered by KPN, Solcon and Freedom Internet.

So I asked [Wayback/Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers @wiert@mastodon.social on Twitter: “Is there any information if (and hopefully estimate when) the @AVM_NL @AVM_DE 7.50 firmware is going to be available for the (in The Netherlands very well sold/distributed) Fritz!Box 7490 model? FritzOS 7.50 supports @WireGuardVPN: a big step forward.”

Last week xs4all internet really has shut down and two long term “buddies” suddenly have a completely different life

Posted by jpluimers on 2022/09/04

For posterity these two tweets from xs4all unixbeheer dudes:

For me it is a strange feeling, but for Cor, Jan-Pieter and some others that also stayed until the very last it is even stranger: after so many years (or decades) at xs4all their life suddenly is very different.

I wish them well and hopefully be able to meet up every now and then.

xs4all voip with Fritz!Box equipment: do not combine Fritz!Box “With prefix” number formats with xs4all “Block international numbers”: it will block non-international numbers too.

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/03/22

If you use xs4all VoIP from any Fritz!Box device, then keep the “Telephone Number Format” for “Country code” on “No”, and “Area code” to “None”:

If you have changed these to “With prefix” like I did:

combined with VoIP settings to block international numbers on the right, then when you dial a number outside your area, you will get a friendly voice telling you “this number is blocked”

KPN vernieuwt abonnementen voor vast en mobiel internet, tv en bellen – IT Pro – Nieuws – Tweakers

Posted by jpluimers on 2019/10/08

XS4ALL Software download site

Posted by jpluimers on 2018/09/14

When you want to download actual known amounts of bytes, then use the [Archive.isXS4ALL Software download site which has plenty of files in both sizes that are powers of 1024 and powers of 1000, so you can use the units that fits you best:

I usually run commands like these:

traceroute download.xs4all.nl & wget -O /dev/null http://download.xs4all.nl/test/2GiB.bin

traceroute download.xs4all.nl & wget -O /dev/null http://download.xs4all.nl/test/10GiB.bin

The first is for speeds up to ~100 megabit/second, the latter for speeds up to ~1 gigabits/second; wget examples based on [WayBacklinux – How do I request a file but not save it with Wget? – Stack Overflow.

From the xs4all shell servers, you have about 1 gigabit speed. At home it is about 80 gigabit.

Since the download is over a longer period of time, you get a better estimate of average speeds than regular speedtest varieties do.

Bye, bye ADSL…

Posted by jpluimers on 2016/12/27

As I got rid of some final hard coded IPv4 stuff, earlier this month I said good-bye to Ziggo cable internet.

Today, the xs4all ADSL line finally got disconnected as well:

My old trusty Fritz!Box 7340 showing ADSL got disconnected for good on 20161217

Which means that the years of running an xs4all DSL connection over mxStream, KPN FAST ADSL and xs4all ONLY are over. Oh the days:
