Raspberry Pi as CD changer in pre 09/2002 E46 BMW 320i touring

Posted by jpluimers on 2018/10/05

My pre 09/2002 E46 BMW 320i touring didn’t come with a CD-changer, and since the Business CD head-unit didn’t support the regular AUX mechanisms (see links further below), I’m researching how to add a Raspberry Pi as CD-changer.

A few things I want to accomplish:

  • Raspberry Pi powers up as it has ignition signal
  • Raspberry Pi powers down soon after it has lost ignition signal
  • Connected via the CD-changer connectors (iBus and audio) in the back

Some links:

Supplying power:

iBus/kBus/CanBUS:

If the model was more recent, it would at least support AUX, but it doesn’t by default and the work-arounds seem to emulate a CD-changer after all:

BMW DIY Poor Radio Reception Repair, AM and FM, E46 3-Series and Other Models | Bavarian Autosport Blog

Posted by jpluimers on 2018/10/01

I need to fix this on my own 320i touring: [WayBackBMW DIY Poor Radio Reception Repair, AM and FM, E46 3-Series and Other Models | Bavarian Autosport Blog.

Basically it’s using DeoxIT on all contacts having to do with the AM/FM antenna signals.

I already have a DeoxIT pen so that should work fine.

For the Touring version, the below picture should help. I got it from [WayBackwww.unofficialbmw.com/images/e46.pdf via [WayBackUnofficial BMW: E46

W123 – Tacho-Reparatur – works for W116 odometer (kilometerteller) as well

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/09/11

Since the odometer of our W116 would stall every now and then, we had to repair it.  Luckily the instructions at W123 – Tacho-Reparatur [WayBack] work fine for a W116 as too.

It’s different between 450SEL and 450SEL 6.9 and contains a bunch of lightbulbs so for completeness some links that help fixing lighting issues:

 Becker Mexico Cassette AUX input Upgrade by Ken Tyler for W116 : Mercedes-Benz S-Class – 280S, 280SE, 280SEL, 300SD, 350SE, 350SEL, 450SE, 450SEL & 450SEL 6.9

A modification to fit a 3.5 mm stereo socket to the front face of a Becker Mexico Cassette to allow use of mp3 players and the like but still retaining AM/FM radio and cassette functions.

Interesting…

We’ve such a receiver in our classic car (see 1970 Becker Mexico AM-FM Cassette Car Radio showing operation & sound – YouTube « The Wiert Corner – irregular stream of stuff).

It would be a great way to add AUX to it, but I’d rather not modify the front-panel. Since the 450SEL69 has plenty of room, I will try to see if the above instructions can make the cable external so the AUX connector will be either near the arm rest or the glove compartment.

This is the radio in our W116 450SEL 6.9 (pictures are at Flickr: mb450sel69).

Still need to figure out how we can connect a mobile phone or AUX to it.

Research research…

Note there were earlier and later models of this:

This is ours:
