Playing around with spammers is easy

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/12/09

Thread start: [Archive.is] Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten on Twitter: “I created a fake company to play around with spammers, and it is just such a joy to use, and you can use it too. A thread: I receive an email from a scammer/spammer. Like this:… “

Archived unroll: [Wayback] Thread by @Boris on Thread Reader App – Thread Reader App.

Via: [Archive.is] Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten on Twitter: “Or, next time you receive spam reply with this: “Please forward this email to bill@noprocurement.com, and delete my email, as I’ll be changing jobs soon, and this email address will no longer be active.””

The [Archive.is] inspiration partly came from [Wayback] The Story of Lenny, the Internet’s Favorite Telemarketing Troll:

Lenny is a decade-old chatbot designed to troll telemarketers that has developed a cult following online. It’s remarkably convincing, but is it actually effective?

Research indicated that Lenny is effective and wastes time of scammers which they cannot spend on calling real people.

Some highlights

Waste time by sending spammers in an auto-reply loop of personas.

“Please forward this email to bill@noprocurement.com, and delete my email, as I’ll be changing jobs soon, and this email address will no longer be active.”

One of the email forwards bounces:

There even is a (http-only) web-site [Wayback] Nordic Procurement Services – Providing Procurement services worldwide since 1994.

A plugin for gmail or other mail systems would be cool, just as having more domains and accounts:

Some people are already adding these to their own domains:

Be sure to spread the word.

Oh, and have some spammers contact john@noprocurement.com

From a while back, but more relevant than ever:

Obligatory video below the fold.

When a cross-head screw is not Philips, and you might need a JIS screwdriver

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/12/06

A while ago, when messing with some Asian electronics, I found that the cross-head screws in it do not fit Philips screwdrivers well.

The cause is the use of JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) cross-head screws in Japan and some other Asian regions.

JIS screws can also been found in other Asian mechanical stuff like motor-cycles and cars.

Here are some links about JIS screws and screwdrivers.

Tried to find the original of “The Netherlands after a huge western storm” map

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/12/03

TL;DR: the picture is at the bottom; I think it is the original.

A few years ago, slightly before a big storm hit The Netherlands ([WayBack] Storm Ciara – Wikipedia), I bumped into a similar “after storm map” that had shifted cities towards the east emphasising in a funny way the expected strength of the storm.

They appeared on both Facebook and Twitter:

The second image was larger, but did not show text “Belgium” nor the upper islands from the first image. Furthermore the first image had a “@goedverhaallekkerkort” bookmark, which – on social media – usually is a sign the image is not original.

So I had to go and find an image based on the first (as it had the most data) but with larger dimensions than the second.

Using “Image Search”  for the image [Archive.is] atlas – Google Search and [Archive.is] storm kaart nederland – Google Search revealed many relatively small images, but also one larger image in the 20200209 post [WayBack] Oeps zo is de kaart morgen als de storm is gaan liggen😂😂😂 via [Archive.is] Google Image Result for https://stoprokenblog.nl/blog_img/w/74498-WbfGk-original.jpeg and 20180119 post [WayBack] Gewoon een verzameling hilarische foto’s #921 – VK Magazine.

I think the final one is the original: it is sharper, and has all the elements mentioned above.

Is this now the famous OSINT? Is it the original one?

VO2max cycle test: Åstrand-Rhyming Cycle Ergometer Test

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/12/03

For my link archive:

In februari 2020, I was at 43.5 aged 50 while starting preparation for rectum cancer surgery (weight 85 kg, after 6 minutes warming up at 125 watt, a steady 138 bpm after 6 minute cycling at 150 watt with 60 rpm).

I thought this was remarkably high for how I felt, which was likely because I had had 35 years of training in a marching band on abdominal breathing.

LanguageTool – Online Grammar, Style & Spell Checker (English, German, Dutch, French, …)

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/12/02

Cool when writing texts in languages I don’t often write in, so I can read them better than I write them:

[Wayback/Archive.is] LanguageTool – Online Grammar, Style & Spell Checker

It supports English (many variations, including US and UK English), German (Swiss and Austrian German too!), Dutch, and many other languages.
