Elon loves burning equity. TechCrunch: Twitter now requires an account to view tweets

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/07/01

In other news since yesterday [Wayback/Archive] Twitter now requires an account to view tweets | TechCrunch

Like many of Twitter’s recent changes, this could easily backfire. If tweets aren’t publicly accessible, search engine algorithms could rank the site’s content lower, meaning that fewer people would be directed to the site from Google.

This not only hampers SEO, but any anonymous access to tweets resulting in Twitter to have become a walled garden without any prior announcement.

As of yesterday, this for instance makes it way harder for researchers to access Twitter in a non-biased way (the Twitter Algorithm will always bias the timeline for an account). It also prohibits the Wayback Machine from archiving Tweets (which I rightnow cannot archive):

Twitter is now more restricted than LinkedIn or Facebook, so I think it is a next step of burning the Twitter Equity to the ground followed after many other steps scaring Twitter users away, for instance as of:

Optimal posting time? (via: Are there optimal days/hours to post questions in order to get visibility and answers? – Meta Super User)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/09/22

A while ago, i came across this interesting question: Are there optimal days/hours to post questions in order to get visibility and answers? – Meta Super User.

The recommended time 1400 UTC is related to my blog post scheduling behaviour.

Virtually all my blog posts are either (when both apply at the same time, that is pure coincidence):

I schedule posts on Monday through Friday:

Difference between 0600 UTC and 1400 UTC

So why the time difference of about 8 hours between 0600 UTC and 1400 UTC?

That has to do with the public I generally interact with: software developers speaking English, mainly living in European and USA, with a minority in India, Asia and down-under.

  • At 0600 UTC, most Europeans are about to wake up or just arrived at work, so they get fresh content. Still quite a few people from India and Asia are up (returning from work) can read it the same day it was posted. And virtually everyone in the USA is still sleeping, so they get fresh content too.
  • At 1400 UTC, most Europeans are at work, people at the USA East Coast just started working and the rest of the USA is waking up and (hopefully) going to work. So you get a huge group of on-line people online with a high chance if comment/answer interaction on your question: great for getting answers on the same day.

LinkedIn: connecting two people, sort of. (via: LinkedIn Answers)

Posted by jpluimers on 2013/11/18

One of the things I wish that LinkedIn implements is an easy way to connect two of your relations.

I understand that the underlying issues might be a tad more difficult than this simple request (what about spam connects, or other security concerns?), but right now the way to do this is cumbersome:

how do i connect two people ?

Daniel Jatovsky:

You cant connect two people, but you can introduce them to each other. Then its up to them to connect.

There are two methods in LinkedIn for doing this.

One is to go to each persons profile. At the top of the profile is a link to Forward this profile. Click on it, forward it to the other person with a note from yourself. Once they’ve responded positively you can forward contact information to each other.

The other is to send a message to both simultaneously. To do that, go to your Inbox and click on Compose a message and select Send a message to a connection. Write a message that you can send to both simultaneously and, if you like, check the box that allows them to see the other persons name and email address.

LinkedIn should send “Notifications for Requests to Join My Group” #fail

Posted by jpluimers on 2010/07/30

Right now, LinkedIn does not send Notifications for Requests to Join My Group.

They should!

Right now you need to watch the LinkedIn group very frequently, otherwise you miss the “requests to join.
Mail notification would make that much less of a burden.
