This will be the year where 4K monitor prices start to come down (via: Blaupunkt B39C4K – 4k voor een prikkie)

I think this year the 4K monitors start to become more affordable.

Just see these price drops:

BBC Radio 4 Extra: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Game – 30th Anniversary Edition

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/13

I sense a lot of procrastination coming up, as the BBC just released this:

BBC Radio 4 Extra – The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Game – 30th Anniversary Edition.

The text part is still the same as the original InfoCom game from 30 years ago. This is the 2nd BBC remake of THHGTTG game. Unlike the 20th anniversary edition that had pictures that seemed random, the 30th anniversary edition now has pictures that make sense for your context.

One of the reasons I like the game so much is that it stays close to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Radio Series and Book.

7 Pro Tips to Make Travel More Efficient (via @Mashable) misses @AirBnB for finding a place to stay

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/13

The 7 Pro Tips to Make Travel More Efficient posting on Mashable has a really interesting set of tips.

But in the final section Book only the first night, I’m missing a reference to AirBnB as an addition to HotelTonight and WeHostels, even though Mashable has a separate AirBnB posting category.

AirBnB is often cheaper than hotels, and more importantly gets you in touch with locals that can get you to the hotspots for dining, etc.

Some links about VMware ESXi, SSD and TRIM/UNMAP support

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/13

These posts seem to describe the current state of the art about ESXi and SSD support, especially with respect to TRIM/UNMAP:

Oh: many people boot their ESXi server from USB as it gives them more flexibility:

Lots of 2.5, 3.5 and 5.25 conversion brackets, cages and hot-swap bays

To get me some ideas on what is available on the market right now: ADATA, CORSAIR, CRUCIAL, PLEXTOR, SAMSUNG, INTEL & OCZ SSD (SG OFFICIAL DISTROS WTY).

For ZFS, this seems the controller of choice:

For high-density data,

For fast data:

Everything needs to fit in something like this HP XW6600. For Raid-Z3 you need many drives according to Raid Calculator | Raid Disk Space Utilization Calculator | ServeTheHomeSTH – Server and Workstation Reviews (as it can loose 3 drives: ZFS Raidz Performance, Capacity and Integrity Comparison @ Calomel.org) another calculator for risks: RAID Reliability Calculator – Simple MTTDL Model – ServeTheHomeSTH – Server and Workstation Reviews.

You can also use the below bays for instance for Finding Uses for Old 2.5″ Hard Drives | | Que.
