Reminder to self: what to do if RDP (MSTSC) or VMware clipboard sharing is broken

Posted by jpluimers on 2009/09/18

Some things to check when clipboard sharing for Remote Desktop (RDP/MSTSC) or VMware is broken.

For Remote Desktop (RDP / MSTSC):

http://blogs.msdn.com/rds/archive/2006/11/16/why-does-my-shared-clipboard-not-work-part-1.aspx

Symptom Possible Cause Possible Solution
Remote-to-local copy and paste broken. RDPCLIP is not in the clipboard viewer chain. Kill and restart RDPCLIP.
Local-to-remote copy and paste broken. TS client is not in the clipboard viewer chain. Close the TS client and reconnect to the session.
RDPCLIP or the TS client is using excessive CPU. There is a loop in the local or remote clipboard viewer chain. Kill and restart RDPCLIP. If this does not fix the problem, close the TS client and reconnect to the session.

For VMware:

When clipboard sharing does not work either one of the ways, or if VMwareUser.exe is using too much CPU:

Kill VMwareUser.exe, then start %ProgramFiles%\VMware\VMware Tools\VMwareUser.exe
