Life after Google+ – Lars Fosdal: Friends+Me Google+ Export tool.
Posted by jpluimers on 2019/01/11
A little while ago, I blogged about Life after Google+ – Lars Fosdal. In the mean time, Lars has made a lot of progress exporting the community [WayBack] Delphi Developers – Google+ (which has moved to en.delphipraxis.net !).
He is a heavy user of the Friends+Me Google+ Export tool, which basically is an actively maintained web scraper with standard output targets:
[WayBack] Google Plus Exporter – Medium: Export your Google+ feeds to WordPress, Blogger, and JSON.
It does not depend on the G+ REST API: “the app is using web scraping and will keep working until the bitter end”.
Quite a bit of that information and the feedback he has is in this thread: [WayBack1/WayBack2] Hi Everyone, We’ve just released Google+ Exporter, an application that helps you to export your Google+ feeds (profile, pages, collections, communities… – Friends+Me – Google+
Of course G+ does not save the whole thread in the WayBack machine, so here it is copy-pasted (unformatted; maybe I will format it later):
Hi Everyone,
We’ve just released Google+ Exporter, an application that helps you to export your Google+ feeds (profile, pages, collections, communities, including all comments) to WordPress 4.x and 5.x Backup, Blogger Backup and JSON file.
Download latest Google+ Exporter version from https://gplus-exporter.friendsplus.me
Another available option is to export all posts published to profile, pages, collections, and communities to JSON file, including all comments!
More details on Google+ Exporter web site https://medium.com/google-plus-exporter
Transform exported JSON data can into imports for other services, or you can use JSON export as a full generic backup of your posts.
The free version of the application enables you to download up to 800 posts per every single Google+ feed (profile, page, collection, community). You can buy a license key to get unlimited experience.
I would love to know your opinion, suggestions or requests. Thank you!
UPDATE version 1.6.0 / 7-1-2019:

REPLY

+Gina Fiedel WP export contains only public posts without comments. Comments are present only in the json export.
Would you like comments to be also part of the WP export? Is it a good idea?
REPLY

+Friends+Me personally, I think it’s a great idea to include comments in the WP export. I’m most likely going to create a site dedicated to all my G+ posts from both my Profile and our business page. It’s not unusual for the comments to be integral to the experience of the post.
When you refer to “public posts” does that exclude communities and/or collections?
Will there be a way to export posts from private communities?
My technical expertise doesn’t include knowing how to utilize the json export or what the look and feel would be for those. Having a hard time wrapping my brain around that option.
Thanks for asking!

Be sure to inform everyone whose comments you decide to republish, as they never gave explicit permission for publication outside of Google+, especially not to an entity other than Google.REPLY
7w
![]()
+Gina Fiedel right now you can export for WP only posts published to profiles and pages including collections.
Next version of the app should be able to export separate communities (public and private) posts for WP.
Right now the JSON export contains all posts including collections and communities (public+private).
The export to JSON is there for full generic backup and for other developers who will be able to create other programs and help G+ users to migrate data to even more services. Together we’re stronger.

+Filip H.F. Slagter comments are also part of the Google Takeout so I don’t think it would be a problem.REPLY

+Friends+Me so far I’ve only found my own comments included in Google+ Stream Takeout data archives. The only time someone else’s post is included, is in the ActivityLog Takeout when I’ve made a comment on someone else’s topic, and even then it only includes the top-level post of the original poster.
Btw, I’m not arguing that the export shouldn’t include comments, merely stating that those who decide to republish those comments (that weren’t made by themselves) elsewhere, should preferably ask for permission, or at least inform the original posters. Especially if the original posters would have no direct control over its privacy settings, exposure, editing and especially their existence.

Hi +Friends+Me Did a test with a brand new 4.9.8 WP I just installed for tests 0592196e5f.testurl.ws – test DJM – Just another WordPress site – no special plugins, except Gutenberg & Akismet & Import.
Imported a 3,5Mb XML file from a community with 100+ active users, this created a few accounts, merged most of them to the main admin (my choice), comments (675) seem OK too, asked to download & import attachments. But : got a Internal error 500 at some point. The admin log says : PHP Warning: rmdir(/srv/data/web/vhosts/0592196e5f.testurl.ws/htdocs): Directory not empty in /srv/admin/htdocs/wordpress.php on line 81
=> IMHO, there’s some bad URL called here /srv/admin/htdocs/ seems incorrect – don’t know if this comes from your side or the importer side…Plus, comments seem to be generated twice for each entry…
Could create an account for you on this server if needed. There’s a problem with categories & tags too. The main category is the name of the community. OK, created. But in the community posts are affected to subcategories (aka Topics I created – see https://plus.google.com/communities/115831804659443760451 ). for each post, the category appears as category-topic which was not created: e.g http://0592196e5f.testurl.ws/wp-admin/edit.php?category_name=african-music-forum-old-african-music
Just a few tags were connected, although tens were created… Appear to have 0 post connected, but some seem to work, e.g. http://0592196e5f.testurl.ws/tag/kenya/test DJM – Just another WordPress site0592196e5f.testurl.wsREPLY

I have downloaded 1.0.7 and the login problem is fixed, thanks. However, now it stops downloading data after a certain amount of time (haven’t sat and watched the whole thing, so I’m not sure what happens when it quits), and the reverts to a state of “not downloaded yet”. I was an early G+ user and have a LOT of posts to download, so this might be a factor.REPLY
6w
+Tony Berno awesome, would it be possible for you to give the app more time to try to finish the download? I’ve noticed the it takes Google more time to deliver older posts.REPLY
6w
+Friends+Me I give it as much time as it needs, but it’s not getting “stuck” or pausing for a long time. It simply quits downloading and goes back to the state it was in before I pressed the download button.REPLY
6w
After restarting my computer and running this by itself, with no other applications running, it finally succeeded, downloading 2516 posts. It is possible that Google needed to retrieve the data from deep storage to avoid a timeout? Anyway, I only needed to use this once, so as long as I can confirm all my posts are in the exported files, I’m happy. Thanks for this, it was exactly the tool I needed.REPLY
6w
![]()
+Tony Berno Yes, that’s most likely the problem. We’ve been confronted with such a question multiple times, and our best guess is that it takes Google+ service unusually high long time to fetch the oldest posts. We’ll adjust timeouts in the next release of the application accordingly.
Thanks again for being so patient with us!

1. The Google+ Exporter application is owned and created by Loysoft Limited a UK based company.
2. We do not store or use or gather any personal info or password. Everything is stored locally on a user computer.
The application is using Electron framework, meaning Chromium web browser is a core of the application and provides visualization engine for user and node.js for the app execution.
A user of the app is signing in to Google account just so the app can get access to Google+ feed to export. Nothing more, nothing less.
3. No information is sent from the application. We just use sentry.io error reporting, so in case the application crashes an anonymized error report is sent.
4. No, there’s no 3rd-party audit of the application. We have a good reputation around here and we do not intend to mess it up in any way.

+Friends+Me Also, based on work by +Filip H.F. Slagter and queries elsewhere:
1. Do you see any feasibility in being able to download only specific Collections of a user?
2. Do you see any possibility of limiting downloads by data, file, or media type.
Both questions are driven by experience of huge image archives, often with many duplicates, being created through Google Data Takeout. Being able to exclude images, or focus on specific collections, or both, can reduce the size of archived, downloaded, and transformed data from as much as a half a terabyte down to a few hundred MB, or less.
I’ve been trying to find out what, if anything, G+ Communities are doing or planning for migration. A few have active plans, many seem either completely adrift or unsure of how to proceed. A Landscape Photography group has a huge amount of photos, but no idea of how to save any of that. I suggested that even a random sampling might preserve something of the earlier group. Otherwise, some sort of hosted or colo-based archival tool would probably be required.
(And this is ignoring the question of copyright completely.)
I’ve made some assessments of G+ Community size distribution (~57k communities of 1k+ members), though vitality is far trickier to assess. My impression is that communities with anything resembling a healthy, active, constructive engagement are the overwhelming minority: 10%, 1%, or less, of all Communities. Have you found much traction / interest from Communities?
Thanks again.

I can certainly vouch for +Friends+Me , I’ve been using their reshare feature for years (has it been that long?!). I haven’t tried this yet (later this week), but I have friends who have successfully.
Per collection export would certainly be nice.
Also a feature to not automatically make the WordPress posts public (although you can probably fix that in the xml).
Also some people might want to strip the comments.
But all those are minor over the huge win in a usable export format. This is what Google should have done.

+Edward Morbius that’s right, just owners not moderators. It makes sense to enable moderators to export community too, since the owner may not be able to. What are your thoughts about it?
Thank you +Kee Hinckley and yes, it’s been that long 👍
I think I’ll enable users to pick what feeds to download. It will enable more users to use the app without reaching the limit.
Images or videos are not downloaded, only posts and comments are so that limits the amount of data downloaded.
Photos are downloaded by WP during the import. Blogger does not care, just shows the image from Google servers. It is possible to extract all image URLs from JSON export and use some other tool to download them all. Or should it be a part of the Google+ Exporter?
There’s not much traction from G+ communities right now but that may change and probably will. It’s not even possible to move, and entire community someplace else, WP looks like the best choice.

+Friends+Me My initial understanding was that any community user or even anyone with read access could archive it. Public data are public data, to a broad extent.
I’m thinking of ways that might go wrong.
I don’t think I’d generally be opposed to moderators as well as owners having access, and would probably argue for broader rather than narrower scope, generally.
Private communities would of course require membership, but your tool can’t access those without membership in any event.
Images: Not D/L’ing images would make my life a lot easier ;-)
A freestanding image URL extractor / downloader could be handy, or an additional module that did that. For the photo-based communities (and many of the larger ones are — whether landscape or Pictures of Pretty Ladies and Men…), that’s a probable interest.
You might be interested in talking to SmugMug / Flikr about their interests / plans / needs. I’ve had an email exchange and could give you their BusDev guy’s contact (hit me at: dredmorbius@protonomail.com). I think they might be interested in acquiring G+ users.
From my inquiries / observations, communities seem headed to MeWe (a fair number), Facebook, Reddit, self-hosting, WordPress, and Google Groups, that I’m aware. Several are looking at distributed / federated options, mostly Friendica or Hubzilla, as those offer groups (Diaspora does not).
The G+MM community has a section for Communities migration. There are also the “G+” Community Owners community and the Google+ Moderators (official) community. Those have little activity. (Both are mentioned on the Wiki page above, along with overview stats I’d mentioned.)

I’ve got a question… I went ahead and got a license and downloaded (gulp) 10K+ posts. I’m impressed overall but I ran into a bit of an odd issue. I see that all the posts are sorted out by collection, which is great! Except the one collection I really wanted to save (15 posts out of 10K, go figure :) ) doesn’t seem to work. I get 0 posts when I try its export button. Can you clarify which value the (on/off) things have when they are white versus pink? I’m not finding that intuitive, I guess?
ETA: So white is off and pink is on, but for some reason that was not at all clear to me. Using pink got me the one collection of mine which was actually private.

So you can download 3000 posts and the app will refuse to download more if 3000 or more posts is already downloaded unless the license is activated. You’ll have to delete the directory with the database in case you’d like to download fresh set of posts in the free license mode.REPLY

I downloaded and installed, but it has problems.
I entered my G+ login credentials, but when I click on the account I can see the G+ interface for a very short moment. After that I am redirected to the startscreen of the exporter and again I read “scanning for Google+ accounts” for some time. Then I get the account shown again and when I click on it: rinse and repeat. So atm this is not useable for me.

There’s a new Google+ Exporter release 1.5.0The application is now more stable, faster and download and export capabilities were radically improved. All feeds need to be re-downloaded because of the new database engine. With this release, we’re changing the free version limit from 3000 downloaded posts in total to 800 downloaded posts per every single Google+ feed (profile, page, collection, community) and effectively increasing the free limit.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!
Download from gplus-exporter.friendsplus.me – Google+ Exporter
What’s New:
* NEW download a profile, page, collection, and community feeds separately.
* NEW you can export any Google+ community you are a member of.
* NEW support for WordPress 4.x and WordPress 5.x backup format.
* NEW export file is split into many smaller files to enable import of a significant number of posts to WP and Blogger.
* NEW updated JSON export structure to support export of all multiple accounts.
* NEW export all your downloaded feeds to a JSON file for further transformations.
* FIXED previous versions were not downloading comments for posts with 3 and fewer comments.
* FIXED export of feeds with a name containing characters not supported by a file system.
* FIXED export of reshares. Reshared posts were missing a message.

Nice does this export my full Google+ stream onto my existing blog? with each post data correct, with links and images from each link pulled into the WordPress post? I often did my first line in bold as the title could that possibly be recognized and used as each blog post title and if that bold line of text is not there then some standard way to make each title? And embed videos too onto each wordpress post? and I can have all my exported Google+ posts into a specific existing or/and new category on my blog?REPLY

Not all users want to download posts from every community or collection, so knowing how many posts it has helps make that decision quickly.

Does your tool support to export JSON first and later WordPress from that?
Or a similar workflow to get the export in both formats?REPLY

+Stefan Quandt sure. Downloaded posts can be exported anytime you want and more than once.REPLY

+Friends+Me I see. This means the initial download part will yield some intermediate format from which I can convert to JSON, WordPress, right?
With respect to coverage, what is the difference between your download and the Google Takeout?REPLY

+Friends+Me Does downloading a community that I’m owner of download all posts from all users in Community or only my posts from that community?
Asking this to clarify, because I would like to import my community posts to Blogger/WP, but not all users posts from the community. Also, Is there a direct way to know how many posts I’ve posted in community?

+Stefan Quandt posts are stored locally in SQLite database and then transformed during the export to requested format.
Google+ Exporter tool exports ALL your posts (profiles, pages, collections, and communities) including comments and transforms them into a well-documented structure and prepares import files for your WordPress and Blogger blog.
Oh the other hand, Google Takeout is not documented at all, terribly structured, hard to transform to any reasonable import for other services and with no support from Google at all.

+Deepak Ravlani entire community is downloaded, all posts.
The number of posts is known only when the download is stopped due to the free limit (800 posts per feed) or a finished successfully. There’s currently no way of telling how many posts here is in he feed before the download.

+Friends+Me All community posts are downloaded, fine.
What If, I don’t want to import 1000 community posts into my blogger, since they’re from other users. Is there anyway to just import only my community posts from that downloaded file into Blogger/WP?
REPLY

+Deepak Ravlani no, you would have to manually update the export file or export posts to JSON format and use some other tool to convert it to files usable for import.REPLY

For me the articles I read and shared over the process of seven years on Google Plus are a valuable resource of information.
Are you already thinking of providing a frontend for visualizing, browsing and searching the data of a G+ export in a way similar to the Google Plus web-site?
Using a tool like Qt writing such frontend should be not too much effort (it could also be scripted in Python), plus the resulting application will run on all major platforms.REPLY

+Friends+Me Damn, that is one hell of a task to sift posts from 1000+ posts of my own community.
Unfortunately, above limitation makes this tool a good download/ backup tool for community, but not an effective import tool for community owners.

+Stefan Quandt sounds cool, maybe there will be time for such a feature or update after the G+ shutdown. Before that I have to focus on the export.REPLY

+Deepak Ravlani the most important task right now is to export high quality G+ data. More advanced transformations can be integrated once the G+ shuts down.REPLY

There’s a new Google+ Exporter release 1.6.0This release enables you to download images attached to any downloaded post and avatars of comment and post authors, useful in cases you remember just an avatar and not a name.
Here’s how to use this new feature https://medium.com/google-plus-exporter/how-to-download-images-7dc321b6f179Refresh (re-download) of all G+ feeds is highly recommended and necessary in case you’d like to download images for posts already downloaded by previous versions of the application.Download from gplus-exporter.friendsplus.me – Google+ Exporter
* IMPORTANT we recommend to refresh (re-download) all G+ feeds to complete a list of images for download and to make sure no post comments are lost during the feed refresh in case the comment author G+ account is deleted.
* NEW Image downloader
* FIXED Blogger post comments longer than 4000 characters are split into more comments to make sure the Blogger service accepts the import file.
* FIXED all posts may not have been downloaded in some cases, usually when a download of a one or more posts failed.
* FIXED support for photo album posts. Some downloaded photo album posts were missing images.
* FIXED YouTube links with attribution_link are converted to a valid YT URL for WP and Blogger exports.
* FIXED Google+ accounts detection#GooglePlusRefugees #GooglePlus #Google+ #DataLiberation #DataExport

What I am looking for is a way to export to a fresh WordPress.com hosted blog: all my posts and shares I have done of other peoples posts including links and attached media, both posted in my own collections and posted in any community.
Can the +Friends+Me do that? If so, are there easy to follow steps somewhere to get this done?
It’s 1000s of posts, so of course I pay for a tool that does this (:

+Friends+Me – I just tried importing community posts exported with G+E to both Blogger and WordPress, and the result was not entirely what I expected. The posts themselves look good, but there is a problem with attribution of the original poster.
It natural that the ownership of the post will be the owner of the blog, but the first line in the post should show a “byline” so that the actual poster is not lost. i.e something like this
Title <blogger>
Month Day, Year <blogger>
Posted by [Original Poster:link to G+] <insert by Google+ Exporter>*Body of text <original post>
Currently, it is not possible to see who originally wrote the community post after it has been imported to the blogs.

+Friends+Me – The algorithm for generating a title could also use some tweaking. I.e. not only looking for a single dot+whitespace, but also break on bang+whitespace and questionmark+whitespace ( text! / text? / text. )
Anybody using linux server with indy components and RIO Delphi? Cause a bug in Namethread is not posible… So, is unusable for me right now. That bug was reported and don’t fixed by EMB before release when is a total show stopper. Cant find the word to describe my feelings to EMB right now. The bug report is open and without any progress in weeks. No notice if will be patched or don’t and even why they release the version with that bug. This are the kind of things making lose at complete the confidence in a tool. What must I say to the customer? I cant even give a time to release my product because that.delphi-developers-archive.blogspot.comREPLY

+Friends+Me– I know time is short and ideas are cheap – but here is another idea.
When downloading or exporting from a community, offer the following filter options:
[ ] Only posts that I made to the community
[ ] Only posts that I participated on in the communityThat would allow the user to capture and migrate content limited to what he/she created in communities.REPLY
5h
+Lars Fosdal That’s exactly what I had mentioned above, that without these options, community owners may not find much value in using this as import tool. With 10000-15000 users on our community, we may not be interested in importing all posts on our blogs.REPLY
