Two might lead to a pattern

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/08/05

There is a known saying phrased using cardinal, adverbial or ordinal numbers, and several naming for the first:

  • One is change, two is coincidence, three is a pattern
  • Once Is Chance, Twice is Coincidence, Third Time Is A Pattern
  • One is an anomaly, two is a coincidence, three is a pattern
  • First time is an incident, second a coincidence, third a pattern

Sometimes the second can lead to a pattern.

A while ago, I had two discount codes for Egardia/Woonveilig:

  • BDKOR062019 issued on 20190204
  • BDKOR132019 issued on 20190325

I needed some new equipment, so I hoped I could find a pattern.

There was.

I entered discount code BDKOR372019 while ordering on 20190910 and got a 10% discount, same with BDKOR312020 on 20200713 with a 10% discount. Now we got 3 is a pattern and 4 convinces the pattern.

Those codes were based on my observation that 06 and 13 are the week numbers of the two dates above according to the ISO 8601 [WayBack] Week Numbers for 2019:

Week number  From Date To Date
Week 52, 2018 December 24, 2018 December 30, 2018
Week 06 February 4, 2019 February 10, 2019
Week 37 September 9, 2019 September 15, 2019
Week 01, 2020 December 30, 2019 January 5, 2020
