“Skiff – Private, encrypted, secure email – 10 GB free” was too good to be true: discontinued (“sunsetting”) at 2024-08-09

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/04/09

Skiff (email service) – Wikipedia already mentioned them as too good to be true for a while:

It launched in 2021 and was developed in San Francisco, California. In November 2023, it reached its own record of almost 2 million users (17 months since launch).

In a 2023 article, PCMAG reviewed Skiff pointing that Skiff offers “End-to-end encryption for email, collaboration, and calendar”, making complements to the fact of its services being free and easy to use (while being available as Apps for macOS, Android, and iOS).

This was all in the midst of me trying to find another place for our mail than GMail, and I am considering Proton Mail (which is profitable and offers both paid and free plans).

I had heard about Skiff Mail, and was lucky to not have included them on the shortlist as mid February, the above Wikipedia articled was updated to contain these two sections:

How to Block Ads on Discord (Mostly) | Lifehacker

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/04/09

Since about a week, Discord started showing ads. I am pretty sure the default setting is against GDPR regulations.

Lifehacker indicated how to disable them. I added numbered steps for readability:

How to turn off Discord ads

Discord doesn’t make it super clear, but there is a way to disable these in-game rewards advertisements, as well as the tracking that goes along with them. To start,

  1. open Discord,
  2. then head to Settings > Privacy & Safety.
  3. Here, disable the toggle next to In-game rewards (aka Quests).

Sixty years ago today, IBM announced the System/360, a line of computers that took over the computer industry. The big idea was that all the systems were compatible and supported all applications (a 360° range from business to scientific).

Be aware: do not skip MacOS full upgrades (as you might miss out crucial firmware updates)

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/04/08

One of the odd things with Apple computers it that firmware updates are part of the MacOS updates.

From this Dutch thread:

[Wayback/Archive] WheelieNick on Twitter: “@jpluimers Welke firmware precies weet ik niet maar je moet er vanuit gaan als je naar iets wat boven high sierra staat wil gaan dat je altijd eerst naar high siërra moet. Niet van normaal siërra naar big sur bijvoorbeeld. Ik doe trouwens altijd tussenstappen, dus van high siërra naar”

I have bumped into this myself where I skipped an upgrade, then the Mac would not recognise certain media formatted with Apple File System – Wikipedia using intermediate versions of MacOS.

The intermediate versions of MacOS had introduced some firmware changes the newer MacOS version upgrade did not apply.

Related blog post: Special cartridges with heat-shrink tubing for dymo and brother label writers.

[Wayback/Archive] Bradán Lane on X: “@jpluimers @jilles_com I have a DYMO Rhino 6000. “New” they are pricy but the 6000 and 5200 are often on eBay at really good prices. I have used the USB interface on it for automation and to upload custom graphics.”

This was in a response thread started by [Wayback/Archive] Jilles.com which you will find further below.

First though, a list of Dymo gear:

Karoly Negyesi on Twitter: “Apparently some/many/most powered USB C hubs with Ethernet are causing serious problems when not connected to a computer. This is such an amazing interaction of various standards.”

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/04/05

TL;DR: for the foreseeable future, avoid USB C hubs with built-in Ethernet as they will bring down your local LAN when no PC is connected to the hub.

Mercurial Bitbucket Archive | Index – the “lost” repositories after Atlassian stopped supporting Hg

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/04/04

Bitbucket nuked all Mercurial repositories in 2020 in the midst of my cancer treatment so back then I wrote Sunsetting Mercurial support in Bitbucket – Bitbucket

So I am glad there is [Wayback/Archive] Mercurial Bitbucket Archive | Index

This is the archive of all public Mercurial projects that were hosted on Bitbucket before they [Wayback/Archive] removed Mercurial support on July 1, 2020. Some projects might be unavailable or incomplete because they were deleted or made private before we had a chance to archive them.
