VMware KB: Sharing a folder from your Mac to a virtual machine

Note that Sharing a Mac folder through VMware Fusion to a Windows VM works, but is:
- not fast
- eats a lot of Mac resources
(it would get the fan of my MacBook Air running like mad when copying about 1Gigabyte of files – about 20-thousand files total; a robocopy /mir sync when nothing is changes takes a whopping 5 minutes)
To configure a shared folder in a Windows virtual machine:
- Launch VMware Fusion.
- Power on the virtual machine.
- Click Virtual Machine > Settings.
- Click Sharing.
- Select Share folders on your Mac.
- Click the + button.
- Browse to the folder on the Mac that will be shared with the virtual machine and click Add.
Shared folders can be accessed via the VMware Shared Folders shortcut on the Windows desktop or the mapped network drive Z:.

OS X (Snow) Leopard System Profiler reincarnated as System Information in OS X Lion (via: OS X Lion: Reclaiming the System Profiler Application | TMO Quick Tip | The Mac Observer)

Not only Microsoft has the bad habit of removing or changing features between (for Apple often minor) operating system upgrades.
This time it is between 10.6 and 107: OS X Leopard, OS X Snow Leopard and OS X Server had a “System Profiler” application that would tell you all about the hardware present in and connected to your Mac.
It has been named “System Profiler” over more than a decade (actually it had almost 3 lustrums), bot no more: As of OS X Lion, this is called “System Information”, and has been redesigned.
Both quoted names can be easily found by using the Spotlight quick search (which I think is still one of the brilliant pieces of software in OS X).

VMware fusion on MacBook Air with OS X Lion seems to hang when getting back from sleep – Super User

If you have reactions on the question below, please add them to the SuperUser.com thread when possible.
Every once in a while, my MacBook Air becomes unresponsive when it is sleeping and I open the lid.
It seems to only happen in these circumstances:
- the MacBook air got into sleep modus because of closing the lid
- VMware Fusion 4 (4.0.2 build 491587) is running full screen
- The guest OS has a blank screen screen saver
When opening the lid, the backlight goes on, but the MacBook Air does not react on any key-combinations I tried.
I tried these, but to no avail:
- press the Touchpad
- press Control + Command
- press Control + Command + Enter
- press Command + Tab
The only thing that works is to press the Power button for 5+ seconds (forcing a hard power off) then reboot.
Two questions:
- For anyone having seen similar bahviour: what circumstances did you have?
- Any solution to this apart from first suspending the guest VM?

Press Ctrl–Option–Command–8 in your colleagues keyboard and watch them getting their inverted colours back :)
It is like the 3-finger salute on Windows, but much much nicer, as the inversion is all done on the GPU hardware :)

If you use Mac and Windows machines, then – despite the Mac keyboards – it sometimes is handy to use Mac to remote login to a Windows machine.
For that, the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1 (especially the download <g>) comes in handy.

Dropbox – Simplify your life – easy way to sync your iOS Delphi XE2 FireMonkey stuff between your Mac and PC

One of the things hard when doing FireMonkey iOS development Delphi XE2 is that you have a multi stage process:
- Develop and test using Delphi XE2 on Windows
- Compile and deploy on the iOS Simulator using xCode on OS X
- Deploy on the real iOS hardware using xCode OS X
Basically you need to share your project files both ways between Windows and OS X.
Naturally, you would share files between your Mac and Windows using Samba. With the introduction of OS X Lion, the Samba support was rewritten, causing all sorts of problems.
One of the problems is that it uses a lot of CPU (I tried copying over a 40GB VM, and stopped because the fan in my MacBook Air was making so much noise, I was afraid it was going to take off).
I didn’t even realize it had one, but a MacBook Air has a Fan, and it vents through the keyboard :)

Download VMware Fusion 4

Right after finding out VMware Fusion 4 got released, I downloaded and installed it.
Basically, there are two VMware Fusion 4.0.1 downloads:
- The 180 megabyte VMware Fusion (for Intel-based Macs).
It is called “light” and only includes the VMware Fusion software in the software and has a URL starting with https://download2.vmware.com/software/fusion/VMware-Fusion-4.0.1-474597-light.dmg - The 381 megabyte “Recommended” (not!) VMware Fusion (for Intel-based Macs)
It includes both VMware Fusion and a 12 month complimentary subscription to McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009 (Recommended) and has a URL starting with https://download2.vmware.com/software/fusion/VMware-Fusion-4.0.1-474597.dmg
I can’t imagine McAfee being larger than the size of VMware, and if it has the same speed impact on a Mac as it has on PCs, then don’t get it: get the light version.

Coincidence? MacBook Air arrived, Windows 8 preview and VMware Fusion 4 got released

My MacBook Air has arrived, a few days before VMware Fusion 4 got out and a very early preview of Windows 8 got released.
Time to move my iOS dev env from my Mac Mini Server dev env over to this fully loaded 13.3 inch MacBook Air model (A1369 with 1.8GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 / 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM / 256GB Flash Storage).
A few initial observations on the MacBook Air:
- I’m the kind of guy that has a plan B in case of disaster recovery. Like many PCs, this MacBook Air does not include any recovery media. Recovering OS X Lion is done through a recovery partition (costing precious SSD space), or if that fails: over the internet.
Of course you can create your own recovery media using the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant, which is a 1 megabyte dmg download. - Another funny thing is that the WiFi antenna of the MacBook Air is far less strong than my ThinkPad W701: while both can connect to the FreeDowntownWifi network, the MacBook Air has trouble transferring data. Apparantly the aluminum unibody design has some drawbacks on antenna performance.
Not having a physical Ethernet connection on the MacBook Air doesn’t help either :)
Oh well, will install it at the Embarcadero office later this week.
A few things on VMware Fusion 4:
- It runs the Windows 8 preview
- It runs the FireMonkey OS X apps (a VM hackingtosh on a PC won’t do as the virtualized VMware video adapter is not up to par for FireMonkey OpenGL support)
Time to have a lot of fun :)
