It looks like Fritz!Box rebinding protection also prevents accessing a FritzBox over a SSH port forwarding

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/08/09

For quite some times my back-up way to access a Fritz!Box when the VPN itself failed was to SSH into a system behind it and use SSH port forwarding to access the Fritz!Box.

Seems that only works for older models with older firmware versions, but newer models with newer firmware now give a rebinding protection error.

I am not sure why it does this as technically there is no [Wayback/Archive] DNS rebinding – Wikipedia.

Regrettably, I could not find a way around this from the links below.

Figuring out what domains/IPs to whitelist for installing/updating winget sources and packages

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/25

A few years ago I asked for some help figuring out what to whitelist so that winget can update its sources and install packages.

This is how I found out.

The queste started with [Wayback/Archive] Need help trying to figure out what domains/IPs to whitelist for installing packages · Discussion #2304 · microsoft/winget-cli

VoIP: passing on a phone number from one Fritz!Box to another Fritz!Box

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/03/11

Most Fritz!Box VoIP configurations have a phone number configured to only work on telephony devices (i.e. handsets) on the same Fritz!Box.

But it is possible to define a telephony device that itself is another VoIP end-point.

This way you can hook a second (or more) Fritz!Box up to the phone number(s) of the first Fritz!Box.

I am using this for two reasons:

Below is how to get this going, assuming the first Fritz!Box is a 7490 running firmware 7.29 and the second is a a 7360 with firmware 6.33 (other versions and firmware versions vary slightly).

But first the related post: Many links about free modem/router choice and their configurations for the Dutch KPN internet/VoIP provider where I figured out that just using a 7360 won’t cut it any more.

thuddevort on Twitter: “You can disable the extra confirmation under System > FRITZ!Box Users > Additional Confirmation”

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/02/16

My ISP did auto-update the Fritz!Box, but did not send release-notes, so I was not aware this feature had been added eons ago:

[Wayback/Archive] thuddevort on Twitter: “@jpluimers @wijnands @b0rk @xs4all You can disable the extra confirmation under System > FRITZ!Box Users > Additional Confirmation”.

I know a second factor is better for security, but doing that on both sites at the same time when setting up LAN2LAN VPN is tough (Fritz!Box names this either “LAN-LAN coupling” or “VPN Connections between the FRITZ!Box and Other Networks”.

A better feature at the same configuration page is instead of disabling, enabling to confirm using apps like Google Authenticator and Authy:

Reminder that the Fritz!Box IKE error 0x1C is still barely documented: crucial places like the built-in help page point to non-existing URLs

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/02/12

A while ago, I had to redo all of the existing Fritz!Box LAN2LAN VPN connections.

It was a pain for many reasons, reminding me of the pain

This is why it was so painful:

Fritz!

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/01/05

cloudfront.net
omroepwest.bbvms.com
i.regiogroei.cloud
static.regiogroei.cloud
cdn.primed.io
omroepwest.nl

omroepwest.bbvms.com i.regiogroei.cloud static.regiogroei.cloud cdn.primed.io omroepwest.nl” / Twitter

Fixing a broken xs4all internet connection was a simple as a cold NTU reboot – jpluimers on Twitter

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/09/11

Translation of solving a broken xs4all connection:

Solved. Summary:

  • Liander and UPS functiond, so both Fritz!Box and NTU had power
  • NTU LEDs show Power and Glass, but no Ethernet
  • Fritz!Box has green Power and WLAN LEDs and a red Info LED

Solution was cold reboot of NTU.

I also neatly tucked away the NTU power cord for an additional 8 minutes extra down time: [Wayback/Archive] mwgp ping – wiert.me

At last: WireGuard VPN with FRITZ! | FRITZ!Box 7490 | AVM International

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/09/08

Early spring 2023 I posted Reminder to self: check if FritzOS 7.50 has become available for Fritz!Box 7490 because it would (likely partially) introduce WireGuard support as I knew it had been available for other Fritz!

Finally, early september 2023 my Fritz!Box 7490 devices updated from firmware version 7.29 to 7.57 so apparently it took AVM quite a while to test and stabilise the new features on Fritz!Box 7490.

The final push for 7.57 might actually be a security issue in prior versions that already looks like being exploited according to [Wayback/Archive] AVM: Fritzbox-Firmware 7.57 und 7.31 stopfen Sicherheitsleck | heise online

The odd thing of the upgrade logs is that the fiber connected 7490 mentioning a DSL settings reset, but the DSL connected 7490 didn’t:

Fritz!Box firewall permissions for NPO Start

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/09/01

I had to add the below to the firewall permission list of a Fritz!Box to allow watching NPO Start, the free Video on Demand service of the Dutch public broadcasting system:

npostart.nl
assets.npo-data.nl
www-assets.npo.nl
start-player.npo.nl
ccm.npo.nl
images.npo.nl
npo-drm-gateway.samgcloud.nepworldwide.nl
time.akamai.com
npo.prd.cdn.bcms.kpn.com

You can find the list on the page fritz.box/?lp=trafapp under Permitted websites edit.

Looking for maintainer(s) for fritzcap (Python project that captures calls from a Fritz!Box)

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/07/12

Given my health uncertainty, I am looking for maintainers for the fritzcap project (it captures calls from a Fritz!Box modem/router and is written in Python).

History

The fritzcap project was originally started in2007 by [Wayback/Archive] spongebob | IP Phone Forum, first as a binary fritzcap.exe Windows executable (see his first post at [Wayback/Archive] FritzBox: Tool für Etherreal Trace und Audiodaten-Extraktion | IP Phone Forum). In 2010 it became an open source Python project at [Wayback/Archive] Google Code Archive – Long-term storage for Google Code Project Hosting.
