VideoLAN on Twitter: “VLC automatic subtitles generation and translation based on local and open source AI models running on your machine working offline, and supporting numerous languages! Demo can be found on our #CES2025 booth in Eureka Park.” (video)

Posted by jpluimers on 2025/01/11

Weekend, so catching up on CES 2025 news.

If you are at CES, be sure to go visit the VideoLAN booth in Eureka Park to witness what I think is likely the most important CES 2025 AI news:

[Wayback/Archive] VideoLAN on X: “VLC automatic subtitles generation and translation based on local and open source AI models running on your machine working offline, and supporting numerous languages! Demo can be found on our #CES2025 booth in Eureka Park.”

In my opinion, though a remarkable statistic, their 6-billion downloads gimmick is just a teaser for the way more important news what this AI LLM is:

  • free / open-source
  • off-line
  • subtitles plus translations
  • 100 languages

Whisper already ran circles around the YouTube automatic subtitle generator, and their automatic translations are far below par (see video below), so having new contender is great!

VideoLAN tremendously raises the bar for all commercial vendors, and at the same time makes:

Radio 10 Webcam – Radio 10 Live beeld – MyOnlineRadio

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/12/27

Gerelateerd:

comex: “Hiding video streams inside PNGs uploaded to Google Drive … How does it get the browser to skip the PNG header”

Posted by jpluimers on 2021/09/02

Wondering what people now are using to store video uploads on cheap and fast network sites: [WayBack] comex on Twitter: “Hiding video streams inside PNGs uploaded to Google Drive: https://t.co/rmK8jicJYl (But what does the m3u8 look like? How does it get the browser to skip the PNG header?)” explained the 2019 situation:

Not sure why: ChromeCast on Harman Kardon BDS 580 series to Samsung MU6100 gives greenish tint

Posted by jpluimers on 2019/12/09

I had a problem similar to [Archive.is] MX613ST Color space conversion issue (detects YUV instead of RGB) – Google Product Forums.

In my case I had a Chromecast 1st generation connected to a [WayBackHarman Kardon BDS 580, which was hooked up to a [WayBackSamsung MU6100 TV.

Everything, especially the white and grey areas, had a greenish tint over it, and I think there was also a purple mismatch.

I think it has to do with YUV versus RGB, similar to [WayBack] Force RGB Color Space over HDMI? – Apple Community.

Though I did not notice that with an Apple TV 4th generation (which you can switch between YCbCr/RGB-High/RGB-Low) hooked up to the same BDS 580.

The solution: plug the Chromecast in the TV, then the ARC (Audio Return Channel) will automatically route the audio to the BDS 580.

Zamzar – video converter, audio converter, image converter, eBook converter – via @Matijn

Posted by jpluimers on 2018/10/12

Even for Geeks like me, this is a great on-line tool for converting media files: [WayBack/Archive] Zamzar – video converter, audio converter, image converter, eBook converter

Thanks Matijn for pointing me to this.

And for nerds there is ffmpeg:

for name in *.ogg; do ffmpeg -i "$name" -ab 128k -map_meta_data 0:0,s0 "${name/.ogg/.mp3}"; done;

Play to Chromecast from VLC 3.0 on Mac OS X (OS X, macOS, or whatever other names apple comes up with)

Posted by jpluimers on 2017/08/14

On my Mac OS X machine, I got this to work with the 20170731 nightly of VLC 3.0.

[WayBackHow to stream from VLC to Your Chromecast (3.0 Updated Version) – VLC Media Player only explains the steps for Windows and Android, probably because they were the first platforms supported by VLC to render on Chromecast: [WayBackHow to Stream Videos from VLC to Chromecast (Including on Windows, Mac & Android) / [WayBackHow to Stream From VLC to Your Chromecast

To make it easier for end-users, on other platforms the menu entries are different.

  • Windows: Menu Video -> Render
  • Mac: Menu Playback -> Renderer (not Render as shown in some posts)
  • Linux: No UI yet.

I found this via [WayBackLatest VLC 3 Nightly Streams to Chromecast Perfectly! : Chromecast and [WayBackHow do I stream to Chromecast using VLC? – Unix & Linux Stack Exchange

On Linux, there is the command-line for now (which works on OS X and Windows as well), or if you insist: use MKChromecast as described in [WayBackHow To Cast Video from Ubuntu to a Chromecast – OMG! Ubuntu!. [WayBack]Mkchromecast This is a program to cast your macOS X, or Linux audio to your Google Cast or Sonos devices with sources at https://github.com/muammar/mkchromecast

On Windows and Mac OS X, after choosing the Render, the steps are the same:

  1. Choose Render discovery on
  2. Choose a Chromecast device
  3. Accept the security certificate for it

I didn’t need [WayBack] https://nightlies.videolan.org/build/macosx-intel/vlc-3.0.0-20170731-0451/vlc-contrib-x86_64-apple-darwin15-20170731.tar.bz2
