An interesting set of scripts from [Wayback/Archive.is] No Joke IT: Graceful shutdown of an ESXi 5.1 host and guest VMs (free edition) using the shell/command line/scripting (UPS friendly).

If all ESXi virtual machines support running of VMware Tools, then the solution is a plain /sbin/shutdown.sh && /sbin/poweroff (see [Wayback/Archive.is] No Joke IT: Shut down ESXi 5.1 guest VMs and the host (free edition) via SSH – the easy way!).

Note: the No Joke IT web-site has vanished, so only the [Wayback] and [Archive.is] links of it still work. The github code was still there at the time of writing.

Some links on rate-limiting Postfix

The crux seems to be a combination of these parameters to do outgoing rate-limiting, for instance with these values:

default_destination_concurrency_limit = 30
default_destination_rate_delay = 5s

Here default_destination_concurrency_limit needs to be larger than one (so mails are grouped by domain) in order for the default_destination_rate_delay to have any effect at all.

You can even extend this to named transports as per [Wayback] Postfix Users – Create Custom Mail Queue answered by [Wayback] Ralf Hildebrandt

> Can I create custom mail queue in /var/spool/postfix to hold the mails for
> specific destination and schedule to deliver one by one for period of time,
> let’s say 2 mins.

That’s not needed. Create a custom transport for the destination.
Then use
<nameofcustomtransport>_destination_rate_delay = 120s

 

In the below bullets from the Postfix documentation, emphasis is mine.

    • [Wayback] Postfix Configuration Parameters: default_destination_concurrency_limit

      default_destination_concurrency_limit (default: 20)

      The default maximal number of parallel deliveries to the same destination. This is the default limit for delivery via the lmtp(8)pipe(8)smtp(8) and virtual(8) delivery agents. With per-destination recipient limit > 1, a destination is a domain, otherwise it is a recipient.

      Use transport_destination_concurrency_limit to specify a transport-specific override, where transport is the master.cf name of the message delivery transport.

    • [Wayback] Postfix Configuration Parameters: default_destination_rate_delay

      default_destination_rate_delay (default: 0s)

      The default amount of delay that is inserted between individual message deliveries to the same destination and over the same message delivery transport. Specify a non-zero value to rate-limit those message deliveries to at most one per $default_destination_rate_delay.

      The resulting behavior depends on the value of the corresponding per-destination recipient limit.

      • With a corresponding per-destination recipient limit > 1, the rate delay specifies the time between deliveries to the same domain. Different domains are delivered in parallel, subject to the process limits specified in master.cf.
      • With a corresponding per-destination recipient limit equal to 1, the rate delay specifies the time between deliveries to the same recipient. Different recipients are delivered in parallel, subject to the process limits specified in master.cf.

      To enable the delay, specify a non-zero time value (an integral value plus an optional one-letter suffix that specifies the time unit).

      Time units: s (seconds), m (minutes), h (hours), d (days), w (weeks). The default time unit is s (seconds).

      NOTE: the delay is enforced by the queue manager. The delay timer state does not survive “postfix reload” or “postfix stop“.

      Use transport_destination_rate_delay to specify a transport-specific override, where transport is the master.cf name of the message delivery transport.

      NOTE: with a non-zero _destination_rate_delay, specify a transport_destination_concurrency_failed_cohort_limit of 10 or more to prevent Postfix from deferring all mail for the same destination after only one connection or handshake error.

      This feature is available in Postfix 2.5 and later.

    • [Wayback] Postfix Configuration Parameters: default_process_limit

      default_process_limit (default: 100)

      The default maximal number of Postfix child processes that provide a given service. This limit can be overruled for specific services in the master.cf file.

  • [Wayback] Postfix manual – master(5): master.cf (where Process limit is the 7th parameter on a configuration line)

           Process limit (default: $default_process_limit)
                  The maximum number of processes that may  execute  this  service
                  simultaneously. Specify 0 for no process count limit.
    
                  NOTE:  Some  Postfix  services  must  be  configured  as  a sin-
                  gle-process service (for example,  qmgr(8))  and  some  services
                  must   be   configured  with  no  process  limit  (for  example,
                  cleanup(8)).  These limits must not be changed.

Some notes on replacing parts of a text file with template text using sed on a Busybox system

Note before you think about putting stuff in /etc/rc.local.d/local.sh: that script will not be executed when UEFI booting.

In a very lightweight Busybox system, I wanted to modify some configuration files automatically using fragments stored in template files.

The system has diff, but no patch.

The basic idea is to use sed to insert the template files into certain spots of the configuration file when certain marker texts are not present. So I want the opposite of [Wayback] Hey Stephen Wood: Try patch instead of sed in shell scripts.

Basically the idea is a poor-man’s patch, described in Too bad: ESXi busybox has diff, but not patch « The Wiert Corner – irregular stream of stuff.

Some links that might help me with this:

One alternative would have been to use ed (which is part of the normal Busybox), but ESXi Busybox omits ed like it omits patch.

Too bad that sed commands are too different from ed commands, as I could have used diff -e on another system based on ideas here:

I might give it one more go, as vi is sort of derived from ed via ex (see vi: Creation – Wikipedia), which means that vi “colon mode” (officially command mode: [Wayback] Vim documentation: cmdline) is very similar to ed.

Another alternative would be awk, but I have done so little work with it awk, that I’m hesitating to use a new tool. Some links:

The kind of modifications I am after

Below are a few links with examples of the kind of modifications I want to make. Most patch just /etc/rc.local.d/local.sh, but some others introduce other changes as well.

Note that especially with networking settings, local.sh commands might not have any effect (for instance when having slow DHCP or other network issues), see for instance [Wayback/Archive.is] I’m running ESXi 5.5 and my persistent route in local.sh is not taking effect after boot. : vmware.

There is a very convoluted way around using local.sh by using the VIB authoring tool as described in [Wayback] How to create persistent firewall rules on ESXi. It requires lowering the software acceptance level to Community Supported (esxcli software acceptance set --level=CommunitySupported), which gives you a hard time installing ESXi updates.

I got that VIB idea from [Wayback] Solved: Re: Persistent firewall rule – VMware Technology Network VMTN, as:

The local.sh file gets overwritten often with upgrades so it would mean another step during the process.

set the sticky bit on your separate xml-file – then it will be backed up and persist through reboot: chmod +t

run backup manually before the first reboot: /sbin/auto-backup.sh  because backup runs only once per hour

Within vSphere, one could use [Wayback] Configure ESXi Hosts with Host Profiles, but a standalone ESXi box is not part of vSphere, so that won’t work.

ESXi 7 and up

ESXi 7 makes the above harder as for instance user root cannot change file rights any more, so eventually I might revert to a VM that auto-boots when ESXi comes up, then patches the right files in place over PowerCLI (read-only) or SSH.

Cryptosense Discovery

This is cool: [Wayback] Cryptosense Discovery:

Free tool that discovers security configuration errors in SSH and TLS servers and explains how to fix them. Supports STARTTLS and can also scan HTTPS, POP3, IMAP and SMTP servers.

It gives you a list of servers a target domain uses (for purposes like web, email, etc) that can have external encryption enabled, then allows you to test these.

The list by default has only servers within that target domain enabled, but you can optionally include other servers (for instance if a domain uses a third party for their SMTP handling).

Basically it is the web-counterpart of a tool like testssl.sh (which I have written about before).

Found while checking out how to test the MX security of a domain using [Wayback] testssl.sh as I forgot the syntax, which in retrospect is dead easy as per [Wayback] tls – How to use testssl.sh on an SMTP server? – Information Security Stack Exchange (thanks [Wayback] Z.T.!):

testssl.sh --mx <domain name>

works fine.

testssl.sh -t smtp <ip>:25

and

testssl.sh -t smtp <ip>:587

also work fine.

Note that not specifying the port assumes port 443, despite specifying protocol smtp. That doesn’t work.

Also, you might try discovery.cryptosense.com which does the same thing only better

That website is made by the cool people at [Wayback] Cryptosense.

Both are a lot easier than the alternatives described in [Wayback] Blog · How to test SMTP servers using the command-line · Halon MTA: using nslookup and dig for determining the affected hosts, using nc or telnet for testing basic connectivity, using [Wayback/Archive.is] openssl s_client to test TLS, and [Wayback/Archive.is] smtpping for measuring throughput.

In addition to the above tools mentioned in the blog, I’ve also used sendEmail (note case sensitivity), ehlo-size, and swaks.

Some insights on how readlink approached canonicalisation of a filename having symlinks

Cool, I didn’t realise how readlink operated, but found out a bit more in the answers to [Wayback] symlink – How to get full path of original file of a soft symbolic link? – Unix & Linux Stack Exchange, thanks to [Wayback] daisy, [Wayback] Peter.O and [Wayback] Gilles ‘SO- stop being evil’:

  • Try this line:
    readlink -f `which command`
    

    If command is in your $PATH variable , otherwise you need to specify the path you know.

    -f will return a path to a non-existent final target, so long as the intermediate link targets exist… Use -e to avoid this, ie. -e will return null if the final target does not exist. – Peter.O

  • Under Linux, readlink reads the contents of a symlink, and readlink -f follows symlinks to symlinks to symlinks, etc., until it finds something that isn’t a symlink.

Too bad: ESXi busybox has `diff`, but not `patch`

On my ESXi boxes, I have a directory with local scripts that in part depend on the machine.

So I contemplated patching the dending parts with patch.

Then I found out that the BusyBox that VMware built for ESXi does have diff, but not patch:

This list is much shorter than the applets that are supported in [Wayback] BusyBox – The Swiss Army Knife of Embedded Linux, so VMware did cut out quite a few.

Generating the above output

The command-line trick above first expands diff using the output of which diff, then finds out where it links to through the readlink -f wrapper there the back-quotes “`” get this output:

# readlink -f "`which diff`"
/usr/lib/vmware/busybox/bin/busybox

Finally the $(...) executes the output of readlink.

It is based on [Wayback] bash – How to resolve symbolic links in a shell script – Stack Overflow

readlink -f "$path"

Editor’s note: The above works with GNU readlink and FreeBSD/PC-BSD/OpenBSD readlink, but not on OS X as of 10.11.GNU readlink offers additional, related options…

Need to devise a way to apply patches

Given there is no patch, I need to think about a good way to apply patches, for instance to snip this into /etc/rc.local.d/local.sh in a reliable way:

Bash functions to encode and decode the ‘Basic’ HTTP Authentication Scheme

IoT devices still often use the ‘Basic’ HTTP Authentication Scheme for authorisation, see [Wayback] RFC7617: The ‘Basic’ HTTP Authentication Scheme (RFC ) and [Wayback] RFC2617: HTTP Authentication: Basic and Digest Access Authentication (RFC ).

Often this authentication is used even over http instead of over https, for instance the Egardia/Woonveilig alarm devices I wrote about yesterday at  Egardia/Woonveilig: some notes about logging on a local gateway to see more detailed information on the security system. This is contrary to guidance in:

  • RFC7617:
       This scheme is not considered to be a secure method of user
       authentication unless used in conjunction with some external secure
       system such as TLS (Transport Layer Security, [RFC5246]), as the
       user-id and password are passed over the network as cleartext.
  • RFC2617:
       "HTTP/1.0", includes the specification for a Basic Access
       Authentication scheme. This scheme is not considered to be a secure
       method of user authentication (unless used in conjunction with some
       external secure system such as SSL [5]), as the user name and
       password are passed over the network as cleartext.

Fiddling with those alarm devices, I wrote these two little bash functions (with a few notes) that work both on MacOS and in Linux:

# `base64 --decode` is platform neutral (as MacOS uses `-D` and Linux uses `-d`)
# `$1` is the encoded username:password

The first decodes the <credentials> from a Authorization: Basic <credentials> header into a username:password clean text followed by a newline.

The second one encodes a pair of username and password parameters into such a <credentials> string.

Viewing the last lines of the postfix log with journalctl (with help from Unix & Linux Stack Exchange)

Two command-lines I use to view my Postfix logs:

  1. journalctl --unit postfix --since "2 days ago"
  2. journalctl --unit postfix --pager-end

Note that neither of these work well with the --follow (or equivalent -f) option, as this will effectively disable the pager (which by default is less).

The second is via [Wayback] systemd – How to see the latest x lines from systemctl service log – Unix & Linux Stack Exchange (which got the--pagerend bit wrong, as it misses a dash and should be --pager-end, but still thanks [Wayback] Daniel Kmak):

Just:

journalctl -u SERVICE_NAME -e

Parameter -e stands for:

-e –pagerend

That’s the one ! Other answers will go through the whole log to get to its end, which can be veeeeery long for large syslogs.

The last bit (by [Wayback] Léo Germond, thanks!) is why I like it most.

Similarly, specifying --since in the first example will not go through the whole log.

Sendmail queue files: “Mhost map: lookup” deferred

I had forgotten about sendmail mail queue entries that start with Mhost map: lookup.

It it happens for all email then you have a DNS problem.

When it happens only for a few emails, then usually that domain is gone (often because of SPAM reasons).
