JavaScript Bookmarklet to enable Mastodon publishing for a WordPress.com post that is edited in the Classic Editor

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/07/02

I quickly hacked together this JavaScript Bookmarklet today, so it is without any checks and assumes you have enabled one Mastodon account for publishing, that you are hosting your blog on WordPress.com, and using the Classic Editor:

javascript:(function(){
  publicizeFormEditHref = document.getElementById('publicize-form-edit');
  publicizeFormEditHref.click();
  mastodonCheckboxes = document.getElementsByClassName('wpas-submit-mastodon');
  mastodonCheckboxes[0].checked = true;
  publicizeFormHideHref = document.getElementById('publicize-form-hide');
  publicizeFormHideHref.click();
  updateButtonHref = document.getElementById('publish');
  updateButtonHref.click();
})();

The above code is the state of [Wayback/Archive] JavaScript Bookmarklet for the WordPress classic editor which enables mastodon publishing (assuming you have one mastodon publishing account enabled … )  and due to be improved in a later blog post.

This will enable the currently edited post to be published to Mastodon, then update/publish the post.

On enabling one Mastodon account for publishing:

Elon loves burning equity. TechCrunch: Twitter now requires an account to view tweets

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/07/01

In other news since yesterday [Wayback/Archive] Twitter now requires an account to view tweets | TechCrunch

Like many of Twitter’s recent changes, this could easily backfire. If tweets aren’t publicly accessible, search engine algorithms could rank the site’s content lower, meaning that fewer people would be directed to the site from Google.

This not only hampers SEO, but any anonymous access to tweets resulting in Twitter to have become a walled garden without any prior announcement.

As of yesterday, this for instance makes it way harder for researchers to access Twitter in a non-biased way (the Twitter Algorithm will always bias the timeline for an account). It also prohibits the Wayback Machine from archiving Tweets (which I rightnow cannot archive):

Twitter is now more restricted than LinkedIn or Facebook, so I think it is a next step of burning the Twitter Equity to the ground followed after many other steps scaring Twitter users away, for instance as of:

Thread by @aakashg0 on Thread Reader App: the Twitter tweet ranking algorithm

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/04/05

Interesting read: [Wayback/Archive] Thread by @aakashg0 on Thread Reader App with this takeaway:

If you take away anything, remember this – the models take in 3 inputs:

• Likes, retweets, replies: engagement data
• Mutes, unfollows, spam reports: user data
• Who follows you: the follower graphImage

Read from the start at [Wayback/Archive] Aakash Gupta 🚀 Product Growth Guy on Twitter: “Twitter revealed its algorithm to the world. But what does it mean for you? I spent the evening analyzing it. Here’s what you need to know:”

The algorithm is at [Wayback/Archive] twitter/the-algorithm: Source code for Twitter’s Recommendation Algorithm.

Via [Wayback/Archive] Andrea on Twitter: “Haha, dát is het dus!” / Twitter

Note: for me the only way to reliably follow people is this: [Wayback/Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers @wiert@mastodon.social on Twitter: “@chrisbensen @geerlingguy @TwitterBlue @elonmusk @tweetbot About the only tweeps I see tweets from on a regular base is the ones I turned notifications on for. It does not matter if they are blue or not. The blue ones tend to post overly large tweets. Those I skip reading.”

ThreadReaderApp alternatives?

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/03/30

A while ago, Threader died, and about the only alternatives back then seemed to be ThreadReaderApp and Archive Today: Threader is dying: save your content as soon as possible:

The alternatives [Archive@ThreadReaderApp, [Archive@WayBackMachine and [Archive@ArchiveIs for the win (:

In the end that’s not completely true, though they do seem to be the only places where that can be triggered without tweeting a kind of “unroll” response to a thread-to-be-archived.

There are more of the latter kind that were active at the end of 2021 when I queued this post:

This one died a silent death somewhere fall 2020:

This one is registered, but does not reply with unrolls:

A repository I want to check out later: [Wayback/Archive] GitHub – the-crib/thread-unroll: Unrolls twitter thread and sends it as a DM to anyone that mentions the bot on the thread.

Finally, some of the helper accounts that ThreadReaderApp uses:

Exclude replies from official twitter search widget (retweets now seem to be excluded by default)

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/02/10

[Wayback/Archive] Exclude replies from official twitter search widget – Stack Overflow (thanks Willem de Wit):

I found an option to include retweets include:retweets so I tried to change that to exclude:replies and it worked!
My search-string is now: from:account_name exclude:replies

Note that there used to be exclude:retweets, but that seems to be the default for some time now, as per [Wayback/Archive] twitter – Is there a way to filter out retweets? – Web Applications Stack Exchange comment (thanks [Wayback/Archive] jxd):

Correction: the checkbox is missing because using advanced search by username now seems to exclude retweets by default.

The big-4 eavesdropping myth explained

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/01/30

Interesting Dutch thread about the myth that Google, FaceBook, Apple and Amazon are eavesdropping on us in order to send advertisements.

Migration from Twitter to Mastodon | ads’ corner

Kris helped me motivate to enter the Fediverse, so here I am: @wiert@mastodon.social

Posted by jpluimers on 2022/11/18

Given Elon Musk taking over Twitter, I decided to create an account in the federated social network Mastodon part of the Fediverse realm. In my case it is [Wayback/Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers (@wiert@mastodon.social) – Mastodon (which you can visit at mastodon.social/@wiert).

Right now the account is rudimentary. More meta-data and media will be added later.

Mastodon is open source at [Wayback/Archive] mastodon/mastodon: Your self-hosted, globally interconnected microblogging community and you can join via [Wayback/Archive] Mastodon – Decentralized social media (joinmastodon.org) after choosing a Mastodon server/website. I have chosen [Wayback/Archive] Home – Mastodon (mastodon.social).

Given a Mastodon has a trunk, messages on Mastodon are called “Toots”.

For now some of the Tweets and links that Kris ([Wayback/Archive] Kris (@isotopp@chaos.social) – chaos.social) posted helping me to start on Mastodon.
