The new G+ and circles are not friends any more

Posted by jpluimers on 2015/11/22

So after you carefully organised everything into circles over the last years,

with the new interface, G+ is moving away from the concept of circles.  As Debi indicates, you can still find them if you tweak Settings and find the right places to click.

The classic G+ URL is https://plus.google.com/?gmbpt=true&fd=1

This is how to get to see who you have in each circle:

  1. On the left menu, hit “People”, then there are tabs to the top for Following and Followers.
  2. under “Following” you’ll finally get to see who you have in each circle.

This is to get some of your Circles back in the navigation on the left:

  1. go to Settings, then
  2. Advanced Settings: Enable circle stream in navigation

Convoluted: moving your WhatsApp history to a new phone

Posted by jpluimers on 2015/11/21

Not without reason there is a FAQ: How do I move my chat history over to my new Android phone?

Since Helium didn’t restore the WhatsApp settings and Android File Transfer refused to paste large files to the new Android phone, this is what I did

  1. On the target phone:
    1. Uninstall WhatsApp on the new phone
    2. Delete the folder in /storage/emulated/0/WhatsApp
  2. On the source phone:
    1. Follow the WhatsApp back-up steps in the above FAQ link
    2. Zip the folder/storage/emulated/0/WhatsApp
    3. Transfer it to DropBox using GhostCommander and the GC DropBox plugin
  3. On the target phone:
    1. Transfer WhatsApp.zip from DropBox
    2. Unzip it to the folder /storage/emulated/0/WhatsApp
    3. Install WhatsApp
    4. Restore the backup

Reminder to self: verify which temporary directories really need cleanup through systemd’s tmpfile mechanism

Posted by jpluimers on 2015/11/20

Message from package aaa_base:

sysconfig settings for cleaning up temporary directories are no longer
supported. Some of the features are provided by systemd's tmpfile
mechanism instead. Please refer to 'man tmpfiles.d' for more
information.

Here are the old settings for reference:

MAX_DAYS_IN_TMP=0
MAX_DAYS_IN_LONG_TMP=0
OWNER_TO_KEEP_IN_TMP=root

StartSSL indeed offers free Class1 certificates for any subdomain

Posted by jpluimers on 2015/11/20

Thanks Craine for answering:

StartSSL does in fact offer free SSL certs for subdomains, though they are Class 1 certificates.

It works: just start the process for the domain, then when you get to the step for entering a subdomain, enter any one (of course www works, but you can do the process multiple times so register certificates for multiple subdomains).
