Thoughts on Flash – we should use HTML5, CSS and JavaScript in stead

Steve Jobs just posted his Thoughts on Flash.
Let me add another thought: I hate flash apps.
Flash should go, and we all should go for HTML5, CSS and JavaScript.
The primary reason I dislike Flash is similar to this quote from Steve Jobs’ post:
Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover.
The vast majority of Flash apps are:
- only usable with a mouse
- expose their UI as graphics in stead of text
It is virtually impossible to operate them without a mouse.
It is virtually impossible to copy/paste text.
Phrasing it a different way:
- Text still is the fundamental data type (not only for the web!), but Flash doesn’t play it well.
- Keyboards are still the productivity enhancer for any app, but Flash doesn’t play that well either.
I think that the combination of both is the reason that Flash apps are relatively small.
There is no Flash equivalent of Google Docs, or Hotmail, and Flash is a only small portion of the “Web 2.0” experience.
If Flash did both well, then people would have started developing those apps sooner, and Flash would have had a much stronger foot in the door.
I agree with Steve Jobs on the future:
Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript
We all should.
