I’m not the only one storing tech gadgets in flight cases (:

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/09/05

It was about 2 years ago that Jilles reminded me I had a flight case with gadgets too.

Back when I assembled it in 2018, I had big plans for showing private “cloud” container experimentation and gadget stuff at conferences. Then 2019 kicked in with rectum cancer.

So it was good that he helped me motivating to get it working again, especially as the time around assembling it so much fun and working on it brought back those days.

Here are the pictures:

  1. Just finished an awesome upgrade on an M1 Mac Studio, upgrading the stock 512GB of storage to its maximum of 8TB. Thanks to Gilles of Polysoft Services reverse-engineering and designing a custom storage module PCBs, I was able to perform the upgrade with ease!
  2. Be sure to check out my video of the complete upgrade process, found here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDFCurB3-0Q

The PCB are by [Wayback/Archive] Polysoft – centre de services à Tours/[WaybackSave/Archive] Gilles AUREJAC (@gillesaurejac) / X Hopefully, they will be available for sale soon.

What happened to the Sonos app? A technical analysis by Andy Pennel, Sonos fanboy/hacker

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/08/16

Four years ago, there was a [Wayback/Archive] Sonos U-turn over ‘bricking’ its smart speakers (BBC) after which hell broke loose in their community.

It was the main reason that I put my wish for Sonos speakers to sleep (and concentrate on surviving cancer).

Since a few weeks Sonos has released new apps that perform way worse and causes great turmoil in their community again, see for instance [Wayback/Archive] reddit/r/sonos: Anyone else worried about Sonos’s future? : sonos and [Wayback/Archive] The disaster known as The New Sonos App – vowe dot net.

I expect this this time Sonos won’t make a U-Turn: [Wayback/Archive] What happened to the Sonos app? A technical analysis is clear about what happened (“data-grab for AI purposes”) and the up-side for Sonos shareholders.

It however is making people that appreciate the former Sonos aim for quality to look for alternatives, which leads me to a post (plus thread) that pointed me to the above technical analysis: [Wayback/Archive] Kris: “Currently 11 Sonos devices. Time for an exit strategy. …” – chaos.social.

It looks like Fritz!Box rebinding protection also prevents accessing a FritzBox over a SSH port forwarding

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/08/09

For quite some times my back-up way to access a Fritz!Box when the VPN itself failed was to SSH into a system behind it and use SSH port forwarding to access the Fritz!Box.

Seems that only works for older models with older firmware versions, but newer models with newer firmware now give a rebinding protection error.

I am not sure why it does this as technically there is no [Wayback/Archive] DNS rebinding – Wikipedia.

Regrettably, I could not find a way around this from the links below.

Figuring out what domains/IPs to whitelist for installing/updating winget sources and packages

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/25

A few years ago I asked for some help figuring out what to whitelist so that winget can update its sources and install packages.

This is how I found out.

The queste started with [Wayback/Archive] Need help trying to figure out what domains/IPs to whitelist for installing packages · Discussion #2304 · microsoft/winget-cli

Reusing the motors and magnets of your old hard drives

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/22

Likely not suited for drones (as the motors are too heavy and have too high RPM), but maybe for other usage: [Wayback/Archive] Unlock the Potential of Your Old Hard Drives: Build a Drone Engine! – YouTube.

The motors do require extra controller logic, as they are BLDC (brushless DC), see for instance:

The other reason I like the video is that it shows how easy it is to salvage parts of your HDD. This comment is golden:

The magnets for the actuator are neodymium! Fun to play with!

When you need USB 3 downstream ports on your monitor, be wary of LG monitors

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/07/15

After researching the below tweet, I found out that many LG monitors have this limitation on downstream ports, depending on how the upstream USB-C port is connected:

Their manuals phrase it like this:

  • When the USB C-C cable is connected between Upstream port of monitor and Host PC, the Downstream port of
    monitor support USB 2.0 device.
  • When the USB C-A cable is connected between Upstream port of monitor and Host PC, the Downstream port of
    monitor support USB 3.0 device.
However, Host PC must support USB 3.0 function.

This means that in USB C-C land (for which Apple was basically a driving force, but nowadays many laptops only have USB-C connections) your monitor downstream ports are limited to USB 2.0.

If I read the various comments correctly, the additional limitation is that in the USB C-C case, the downstream ports are non-powered.

Which means I will avoid LG monitors at all cost.

Tweet: [Wayback/Archive] anna (arar) meow 𓃠 on X: “i have this monitor connected to my mac with a single USB C-C cable. why can’t i have USB 3.0 speeds on the downstream ports??? why does it work with the USB C-A cable?? is there a way around it? or is there just not enough bandwith for both video and these silly ports?”
