Reminder to self: mid-term solution for replacing Ubiquiti access points

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/12/11

Last year, after an already long sequence of doing stupid things, Ubiquiti sued Brian Krebs.

For many this was a reason to think about what to replace their Ubiquiti.

My cloud key had already died, I never installed the USG router, so this is the reminder to see if anything has come up to replace the Unifi access points that is easy to manage in a self-hosted way are powered over ethernet, do the same seamless handover and cooperative WiFi antenna management.

Some links from back then:

Some notes on the PC Engines apu2e4 router board (apu2e4 = 3 i210AT LAN / AMD GX-412TC CPU / 4 GB DRAM)

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/10/27

Some links on the pfSense hardware I am planning to use.

Whereas apu1 was totally different, apu2, apu3, apu4 and apu6 are very similar. The letters after the first digit indicate evolution of the boards. The first and last digit set apart features. Together, they form a confusing matrix which is not really made clear at the PC Engines web-site as some intermediate categories are missing which makes it hard to get an overview.

Basically their shop site has the list of most current products and is easiest to get links to the actual product names. Like many Swiss companies, they accept multiple currencies, so there are three links to the shop:

Jen Gentleman on Twitter: “Did you know that if you press CTRL + ALT + Tab then the ALT + Tab UI will stay open without you having to continue holding the keys down? 👀” / Twitter

I didn’t, so I suggested this:

Fixing a broken xs4all internet connection was a simple as a cold NTU reboot – jpluimers on Twitter

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/09/11

Translation of solving a broken xs4all connection:

Solved. Summary:

  • Liander and UPS functiond, so both Fritz!Box and NTU had power
  • NTU LEDs show Power and Glass, but no Ethernet
  • Fritz!Box has green Power and WLAN LEDs and a red Info LED

Solution was cold reboot of NTU.

I also neatly tucked away the NTU power cord for an additional 8 minutes extra down time: [Wayback/Archive] mwgp ping – wiert.me

At last: WireGuard VPN with FRITZ! | FRITZ!Box 7490 | AVM International

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/09/08

Early spring 2023 I posted Reminder to self: check if FritzOS 7.50 has become available for Fritz!Box 7490 because it would (likely partially) introduce WireGuard support as I knew it had been available for other Fritz!

Finally, early september 2023 my Fritz!Box 7490 devices updated from firmware version 7.29 to 7.57 so apparently it took AVM quite a while to test and stabilise the new features on Fritz!Box 7490.

The final push for 7.57 might actually be a security issue in prior versions that already looks like being exploited according to [Wayback/Archive] AVM: Fritzbox-Firmware 7.57 und 7.31 stopfen Sicherheitsleck | heise online

The odd thing of the upgrade logs is that the fiber connected 7490 mentioning a DSL settings reset, but the DSL connected 7490 didn’t:

Fritz!Box firewall permissions for NPO Start

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/09/01

I had to add the below to the firewall permission list of a Fritz!Box to allow watching NPO Start, the free Video on Demand service of the Dutch public broadcasting system:

npostart.nl
assets.npo-data.nl
www-assets.npo.nl
start-player.npo.nl
ccm.npo.nl
images.npo.nl
npo-drm-gateway.samgcloud.nepworldwide.nl
time.akamai.com
npo.prd.cdn.bcms.kpn.com

You can find the list on the page fritz.box/?lp=trafapp under Permitted websites edit.

Learned a while ago from @Caramelia79  at Twitter: “AEG Methode.”

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/08/28

Too bad that [Wayback/Archive] Cara (@Caramelia79) / Twitter deleted their tweet before it got archived, so this lone tweet does not really make sense now:

[Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers on Twitter: “@Caramelia79 @unimanatee Heute neu gelernt: AEG Methode.” / Twitter

The joke however was this:

AEG Methode:

  1. Ausschalten
  2. Einschalten
  3. Geht

It is also known as “AEG-Prinzip” and refers back to the AEG brand that was (still is?) big in Germany for household appliances and industrial products.

The not so cool thing is that by now it seams to mean:

  1. Ausschalten
  2. Einschalten
  3. Geht nicht

as about a year ago some AEG microwave appliance models show errors F606 and F254 after a firmware update: they now think they are steam ovens but cannot find the correct steam hardware:

All printers hate us

Posted by jpluimers on 2023/08/11

I’m not alone in feeling hated by printers and multifunctionals.

I had already seen this 2019 comic [Archive.is] System32Comics on Twitter: “Printers nowadays… “ quite a while ago:

  1. User: Hey printer, can you please print this document?
  2. Printer: Low on Cyan
  3. User: Don’t worry, it’s just a black and white text
  4. Printer: No fuck you, low on Cyan

Printers and the drivers shipped by manufacturers hate me so much, that I now have the habit of using older printers which are better supported out-of-the-box by modern operating systems, hence this tweet:

[Archive.is] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers on Twitter: “I try to avoid using the software provided by the printer manufacturer. Usually stock PCL or PostScript drivers work fine.… “

Thanks to [Archive.is] Matt Schultz 😷 on Twitter: “Seems about right… … “, I found out that early 2021 Stevie Martin came along with this hilarious video [Archive.is] “when you’re trying to print something”:

https://twitter.com/5teviem/status/1367868899681832965

And of course the System32Comics version was commented immediately: [Archive.is] Mr. Dubi and Dr. Kan on Twitter: “… “ (:

But also a few other nice comments were made that I had not known of before:

I got at that thread because of [Archive.is] Troy Hunt on Twitter: “No? Yes? The UX in this @Epson printer is undoubtedly one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Just insane. (Near new ET-16600 FWIW.)… :
