MacBook (or -Pro; -Air): Disable the default “fn key” behaviour and enable the normal Function-keys by default

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/10/03

In their infinite wisdom Apple has chosen to cripple the Apple keyboards on the MacBook (and -Pro and -Air) to default the top-row keys to not behave as function keys.

Apparently they expect people to use those keys more often for changing screen brightness, multi media playing, sound volume, than as function keys.

Maybe it is their 1 Infinite Loop address, but out there in the real world, people appreciate the function keys by default to behave, well like they are meant for: Function Keys and not having to press the fn key to use them.

Actually, some people at Apple were smart enough to make this configurable, but it is well hidden behind the phrase “Use F1-F12 keys to control software features” as the MacRumors Forums 2007 post titled “View Single Post – How To F Lock?” points out.

In the mean time however, the Mac OS X System Preferences to reorganized quite a bit, and “Keyboard & Mouse” are now to separate entries. So the steps are now these:

  1. Press Command-Space to start the Spotlight Window
(yes, the Command Key still is marked as ⌘ for consistency, but for how long?)
  2. Type “Keyboard” (without double quotes ;-)
  3. Choose the “Keyboard” entry under “System Preferences”
  4. Put a checkmark in front of the “Use all F1, F2, etc. jeys as standard function keys”
When this option is selected, press the Fn key to us ethe special features printed on each key”
(note that on a MacBook Air, the key is not “Fn”, but “fn”: so far for consistency again)
  5. Done.

There even seem to be some answers on the Apple discussion forums seem to hint on this, but – at the time of writing – they all conveniently show up as “We’ll be back soon” for some time now, thereby redefining the term “shortly” in the same pass:

We will be back soon.

Being in this mode, it would be soooooo nice if actually they marked the option key with the same character as they refer to it from the menus: ⌥.
They used to on older versions of the option key (even on old MacBook Pro machines). Now that would be consistent user experience…

Now people have to find the right Apple documentation on keyboard shortcuts to find out what the symbols mean.

But – though often famed for consistency –  I don’t think it is one of Apple strengths.

WordPress › Support » WordPress is inserting div tags

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/10/03

I just reproduced this: WordPress › Support » WordPress is inserting div tags.

  1. Start an unordered or ordered list
  2. Type entries
  3. After the last entry, press Enter twice
  4. Then type a few lines of text with Enter as separators
Those lines of text will have
DIV tags in between them
Just like this post.

Download: Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1 (via Microsoft Office for Mac Downloads and Updates | Office For Mac)

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/09/30

If you use Mac and Windows machines, then – despite the Mac keyboards – it sometimes is handy to use Mac to remote login to a Windows machine.

For that, the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1 (especially the download <g>) comes in handy.

Camera Shutter Life Database

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/09/30

The Camera Shutter Life Database can give you some indication how long the shutter of your DSLR can last.

Both my Nikon body types are listed: The site has an entry for the Nikon D300, and the D700.

At the end of each page, you can upload your own shutter counts.

Mouse cursor sometimes invisible when running an XP guest in VMware Workstation/Player: Invisible Mouse Cursor on Text Editors « The Wiert Corner – irregular stream of Wiert stuff

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/09/30

The  RDP to VMware host running an XP guest: Invisible Mouse Cursor on Text Editors problem is not limited to RDP-ing into the VMware host, but also happens on some hosts themselves (including my ThinkPad W701 running Windows 7 x64).

This  VMware Communities: Invisible Mouse Cursor on Text Editors … thread (that has a different host configuration: Vista) comes up with 2 different solutions that both work:

  • Make your Windows XP mouse scheme the “Windows Black (system scheme)”
  • Put the Windowx XP video hardware acceleration one position below maximum.

Since less hardware acceleration also means far less performance, I’ve opted for the first solution.

De “betrouwbare” overheid: Regeling vitaliteitssparen bekend

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/09/29

Regeling vitaliteitssparen bekend.

EditorLineEnds.ttr – what is it?

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/09/29

Sometimes when you start Delphi 2005..2010 multiple times, you get an error message similar to this:

[Error]
Cannot create file "C:\DOCUME~1\username\LOCALS~1\Temp\EditorLineEnds.ttr". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
[OK]

Edit: It looks like some people have issues with Delphi 2006 and higher in combination with Windows 7  and higher and KB2982791 or KB2993651 installed. I only do for Delphi 2006 (for 2007 and higher I use the IdeFixPack from Andreas Hausladen). Thomas Mueller wrote a workaround which works in Delphi 2006 and up: Delphi 2007 error: “Cannot create file C:\Users\Admin\AppData\Local\Temp\EditorLineEnds.ttr” – Stack Overflow.

Since there are [WayBack] are [WayBack] a [WayBack] few [WayBack] QC [WayBack] entries on the EditorLineEnds.ttr file: what is it?

In fact, there are two files in that %TEMP% directory: EditorLineEnds.ttr and EditorLineEnds.for

EditorLineEnds.ttr is a TrueType font (you can copy it to EditorLineEnds.ttf and view it using the font viewer that Windows has built-in). Read the rest of this entry »

Delphi XE2 Update 1 is out; be sure to get it.

Posted by jpluimers on 2011/09/28

I’m at the BASTA.NET conference, so I need to keep this short:

Be sure to get Delphi XE2 Update 1 and read the release notes. You will need it in order to apply future updates, which will come soon and often: a big change when compared to previous product releases.

You will need do a full uninstall/install cycle, which will take a while.

On the Mac, you will also need to uninstall/install the Delphi XE 2 FireMonkey iOS support package as well.

It is worth it: tons of bug fixes, and an importent fix to comply with licensing (the first XE2 version had a license issue with the GLScene: if you have 3D apps, then Installing Update 1 and rebuilding your source will ensure that your applications have a valid redistributable license).

Bug fixes (over 120!) are in these areas:

  • FireMonkey design-time and run-time fixes
  • New VCL Styles
  • VCL Styles design-time and run-time fixes
  • IDE fixes to improve stability
  • C++ and Delphi compiler fixes
