How to Switch Google+ Stream from Multi-Column View to Single Column (via: TechnoDuet)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/08

Subtle, as the “More” button got removed, but the Accessibility setting is still there:

If you also want to see the posts in ‘What’s Hot’ and Communities in single-column, then go to Account Settings -> Google + and select the Accessibility checkbox as shown below:

Enjoy the uncluttered and headache-free single-column layout of Google+ posts!

Now I can enjoy all G+ streams to be in one column format so it is easier to track the order of posts.

Remove email address from suggestions in To field on Gmail (via: Web Applications Stack Exchange)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/08

Every once in a while, you have a wrong address in your GMail auto complete list (for instance when someone moved to another provider or you mistyped it).

This is how to delete it:

  1. Delete his email address from Other Contacts under Gmail Contacts.
  2. Reload Gmail and search your contacts for the email address to make sure you really got rid of it.

Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 Scanner for PC and Mac (PA03656-B005) (via: Amazon.com: Customer Reviews)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/08

I didn’t have time yet to get one, but the Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 (thanks Olaf Monien for pointing me at this in the first place) is definitely on my list of devices to install soon as a successor to my Fujitsu ScanSnap S510.

The S510 has a few drawbacks:

  • Only connects through USB.
  • Only has a very old version of Adobe Acrobat which – even worse – has refused to install any security updates for a while now.
  • Only scans if your PC is logged on.
  • Too often wrinkles paper or multi-feeds (from the beginning, so it wasn’t wear of the rollers).
  • Has problems scanning business cards.
  • Black&White has rough edges around scanned text.

I wanted a new scanner that gets rid of at least a few of these drawbacks.

The Fujitsu ScanSnap site already lists some compelling iX500 features (like 25 ppm, parallel OCR PDF, paper handling, ultrasonic multi-feed detection), but failed to indicate about some of the other drawbacks.

Most reviews of the iX500 were unclear about that as well, until I read the bottom of this Amazon.com review: Read the rest of this entry »

HTML Best Practice: Get your HEAD in order (via: Eric Law; IEInternals on MSDN Blogs)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/08

Even though 3 years old, this is still relevant. Thanks Ilya Grigorik for pointing me at it.

Make sure your HTML HEAD tag has the elements in the below order:

  • any charset must come first (UTF-8 works best) though even better is to specify this in your http header,
  • any any x-ua-compatible comes second.

Why? Read Best Practice: Get your HEAD in order – IEInternals – Site Home – MSDN Blogs.

So the document element starts like this: Read the rest of this entry »

Choose your chart type & Amount of profanity in git commit messages per programming language (via: andrewvos.com)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/07

Funny charts at andrewvos.com – Amount of profanity in git commit messages per programming language.

The source is online too: AndrewVos/github-statistics.

And it led me to this really nice way of choosing your chart type.

Formatting your G+ posts (via: Ahmed Zeeshan – Google+ – Google+ | The Early Adopter’s Guide)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/07

Ever since I started G+, I was frustrated by the lack of markdown you can use.

Luckily, I found this post by Ahmed Zeeshan titled Google+ | The Early Adopter’s Guide Note.

It is not only the content of his post, but also that he made available the source template available, so it becomes much easier to start writing a G+ post.

Well done Ahmed!

Read his other posts too: highly recommended.

OpenSUSE 12.2: Install package lesspipe and using it from bash

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/07

lesspipe is a great tool:

lesspipe.sh is an input filter for the pager less as described in less‘s man page. The script allows you to view files with binary content, compressed files, archives and files contained in archives.

… however getting it to run on OpenSUSE was a bit of a journey as it is not part of the standard OpenSUSE 12.x repository. You can only get ‘unstable’ lesspipe packages, of which the Show home:adra / lesspipe – openSUSE Build Service seems to be maintained most frequently.

This is how to install it from there: Read the rest of this entry »

WebRTC diagram of flow and their states: Overview of a peer connection lifetime (via: Alexandre Gouaillard on Google Groups)

Posted by jpluimers on 2014/03/07

From Alexandre GOUAILLARD:

I see a lot of questions on the mailing list, in my course, and during the meetups about the different states and flow of a peer connection. I thought I should share a slide that shows an overview of what you should expect, as it proved helpful for some as a reference.
