IPv4 subnet/CIDR table from OccupytheWeb on Twitter: “Network Basics for Hackers: Subnetting, Subnet Masks and CIDR Notation …”

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/11/27

I wrote about programs and scripts doing IPv4 subnet calculation, but sometimes it is easier to have a table at hand, so here is the one I found at [Wayback/Archive] OccupytheWeb on Twitter: “Network Basics for Hackers: Subnetting, Subnet Masks and CIDR Notation #networks #networkbasics #subnetting #infosec #networks4hackers #cyberwarrior #cyberwarrior #networkbasics #networkbasics subnet”

How to Weaponize the Yubikey – Black Hills Information Security

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/11/12

I totally missed this back in 2019 when having the first belly surgery (that eventually would lead up into discovering I had already had rectum cancer at that time) [Wayback/Archive] How to Weaponize the Yubikey – Black Hills Information Security.

Luckily I got a reminder: [Wayback/Archive] jilles.com on Twitter: “/me the asshole that spoils the magic trick …” after [Wayback/Archive] yan on Twitter: “who’s excited for defcon next week”

Note that Dell 3060 and 3070 Micro MFF have M.2 PCI-e x2 (the 3070 documentation is correct; the 3060 documentation indicates x4); same for mini and tower machines

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/10/25

Now that Dell 3060 and 3070 Micro MFF have become available quite a bit  cheaper than before, please note that both only support M.2 PCIe x2 (though the 3060 documentation indicates x4, the 3070 documentation correctly states x2).

This is a board electronics issue, as the chip-set does support x4.

The M.2 connector however is more versatile than I expected and does support a variety of M.2 keying of which not all “big connector” PCI-e or USB M.2 adapters support:

How to reset an Anker PowerCore+ 26,800 USB power bank

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/10/21

I have a few Anker PowerCore+ 26,800 USB power banks of which one would not show the charger lights any more. This is how to reset these power banks (should also work with other Anker power banks).

Below is how to reset it; after that the charging indicator started functioning again:

Some notes on the TEAC CA-200 OEM Dell card reader

My Twitter thread from a while ago on the TEAC CA-200 IEM Dell card reader which I based on my own pictures and these searches:

Here we go (also threaded at [Wayback/Archive] Thread by @jpluimers on Thread Reader App):

Fixing the date/time of a ST-977 or ST-977T weather station

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/09/23

A long time ago I asked about the manual for a Daryis ST-977 weather station, but got no response from the manufacturer or anyone else.

So about 9 months later the topic came back up and I did get some responses, most suggesting to use the SET button which I already tried earlier.

I retried and found out the button was both bouncing and needed to be held for a really long time (15+ seconds!) to even switch to “edit” mode.

With 4 AA batteries in the base it at least should survive a power outage and hopefully by now we have switched away from using daylight saving time in Europe so no time changes are needed in the future.

Later I found out the FCC was on the external sensor and could find back a manual of a similar model:

YouTube Archived: private Dell video about detecting non-POST issues like motherboard or memory failures

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/09/09

I forgot where I got this video from: [Wayback/Archive] YouTube Archived: private Dell video about detecting non-POST issues like motherboard or memory failures

It came in useful researching beeping pattern combined an amber/orange blinking pattern on one of my 2018 Dell 3060 MFF machines.

TL;DR

NOTE: On any OptiPlex built since 2012 (that is, 7010/9010/9010 AIO), Dell has stopped using all beep codes except for the Memory Failure code. (1, 3, 2, or one beep, then three beeps, then two beeps.) If your computer was built after 2012 and is making any other beep code, contact technical support for further help.

I knew it already needed a new coin cell battery, but that was surely not the only problem with it, and what type of battery it was (TL;DR: CR2032 and likely longer lasting BR2023 will be compatible too).

I’m not the only one storing tech gadgets in flight cases (:

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/09/05

It was about 2 years ago that Jilles reminded me I had a flight case with gadgets too.

Back when I assembled it in 2018, I had big plans for showing private “cloud” container experimentation and gadget stuff at conferences. Then 2019 kicked in with rectum cancer.

So it was good that he helped me motivating to get it working again, especially as the time around assembling it so much fun and working on it brought back those days.

Here are the pictures:

With the newest PowerToys version, the Microsoft teams shows they forgot about their CUA heritage

Posted by jpluimers on 2024/08/30

The most recent Microsoft Power Toys version binds to Alt + Spacebar which indicates the Windows team has forgotten about the CUA (Common User Access) heritage.

[Wayback/Archive] PowerToys bring fun tweaks to Windows 10 and 11 • The Register

And that tells us something else, too: that none of the Microsoft developers involved in building and releasing this tool are old-style keyboard warriors, because since Windows 1.0 in 1985, Alt+space has been the keystroke to invoke the window-management menu. From Windows 2 onwards, the leftmost button on every Windows title bar even looked like a space bar, to remind you. So to maximize a window, it’s Alt+space, x; to minimize, Alt+space, n; to resize with the keyboard, Alt+space, s, and so on.

Via [Wayback/Archive] Jeroen Wiert Pluimers @wiert@mastodon.social on X: “Stealing Alt+Space for a Power Toy, the Microsoft @Windows team has forgotten about its CUA heritage.”.
